evilguy12: Based on the GUIDE TO GETTING INTO GAMES INDUSTRY book thingy. I've never read the actual magazine, too expensive. The only reason I read Gamesmaster is because my school library gets it.
EDGE have on occasion produced some very high quality supplements however usually they are by guest writers. In fact the only thing I used to tolerate in EDGE was the regular column Mr. Biffo used to have (Fans of Channel 4's Digitizer page may remember the name). However on the whole EDGE are elitist, goldfish-memoried, industry cock-sucking, graphic whores who have absolutely no integrity whatsoever. They will do and say absolutely anything to help advertise the worst crap you can imagine as long as their pockets are stuffed with goodies by the publisher.
EDGE - Proudly selling out since 1993.

Paradoks: I said earlier that I've been reading CDA since late 1998 and that I'm still a subscriber, so you see that I disagree about the "they were never good" part :P.
Alas, You are not going to continue this subscription..;) I may have exaggerated a bit, but i remember their early stuff, 1996 or so, back when they issued CDA back to back with PC Shareware, and always seen them as a low quality market filler, then they got bigger, and started adding games, and i've read them sometimes, and found that the free games were the best thing they did, their reviews put me off though.
Paradoks: While I never considered them to be on par with TS, Reset or early SS, it still was a good magazine with it's own style. Sure, they were far from perfect, with their own set of ridiculous views and mistakes, but what magazine wasn't? Are you saying that TS and SS didn't give reviews with "10/10 for each major title"? :P
I don't really remember TS sucking up with high praise over mediocre titles, SS did, but not in their prime, but in their downfall years [yeah, most of the time], but i've stopped praising SS then, and still heard a lot of praise on CDA.. Bah! I still do, some of my friends still go arouhnd "and CDA said..", and they are 30.. mindfu.ked beyond recognition i guess.;P
I was always a sceptic forwards new titles, i remeber i was revolted when i first saw and played Quake.. First thought i had was that they should wait with 3D gfx until 3D acually looks good. Dunno why, AITD looked great for me.. And everybody praised Quake for it's blockyness.. [I've developed a secret Quake fetish later on, yet still prefer Doom.]
I've gotta check out SS reviews on the first Tomb Raider, i remember it was ugly, unresponsive, and had a very bad camera.. Perhaps i am a bit overnostalgic on SS...
Anyhow, I've checked CDA in summer of '96 and didn't bother to check them out until years later, so maybe i am missing something.
If i remember right, those full versions are not localized, but original mostly, right? I have a CDA Fallout 1 and Red Faction somewhere here, somehow the language version escaped me.
Paradoks: About SS and japanophiles. Oh my, I still remember it:
"What is this supposed to be... this.. Manga Room... thing. Two pages wasted on some stupid Japanese cartoons? What were they thinking? Fortunately no one sane would enjoy this... thing, so thankfully it will be gone by the next month". Suffice to say that I was somewhat disappointed with the general response :P.
And on a side note - it's really weird talking about these magazines in English. :)

I was really into that, a wee bit before SS propagated japanese animation, i was even on some of those Manga No Sekai conventions. I was actually happy that SS evolved into something more than just games, but i remember i was afraid that a lot of people will storm that new plane and spawn the place with BS. You know, kinda like Counter STrike, it was a cool until kids stormed in and it became Quake 3 1/2.
And it happened,
But i WAS bothered about the evergrowing console pages... Consoles? in MY Service? Now that's low.. But the screens gave me a chuckle, it was like watching some weird Atari 2600 screens in 1987 right next to C64 Last Ninja review. Surprisingly, consoles are THE market today, i never expected that...
Actually, discussing good old zines in english gives it an international feeling, not just "local folklore"..
-What's a TS?
-Some local legend. like banshee's in Ireland..
Oh, did You know that Atari Fan No 1 Krzys K. from TS was a real guy? Who sadly passed away in a car accident years ago?

I made a mistake - I meant late 1997. Yes, I am not going to continue this subscription, but that doesn't change the fact that I've been reading it quite regularly for more than 12 years :P. Their reviews have always been hit or miss - ranging from laughable (like the ones I mentioned) to really good ones. But there's no denying that they are the biggest magazine around these days, and as such, they often get exclusive material. But it's mostly the recent changes (on top of usual abundance of errors) that made me resign.

So TR and Quake were average overrated games? OK - see what scores they received from your favourite zines in the attached pictures :P.
But I also didn't understand why people were so exited about early "true" 3D games. The "blocky" models and pixelated textures really bothered me, and I couldn't understand why wouldn't they just make nice looking sprites instead. That changed with the introduction of accelerators, but I still like 2D graphics.

It depends on who they get the licence from. Many games are (thankfully) in English, but in recent years they really increased the number of translated ones [throws random curses at kids who don't learn languages these days].
The strong point is that they sometimes include games that weren't distributed in Poland (like Psychonauts for example).

And it happened,
And it happened,
My attitude towards manga and anime quickly changed from neutral to highly negative, thanks to my "friends" constantly babbling about "how awesome Sailor Moon is" :P.
About SS evolving into something more than just a game magazine - that's the part I liked about Reset, with the difference that Reset started as something more than just a game magazine. They had many really interesting articles (completely unrelated to gaming).

I never had a problem with consoles in SS. These were very short "reviews" that didn't take that much space and gave me the idea on what was happening at the "enemy camp".
Ironically that's one of the main reasons of why I am resigning from CDA now.
Arteveld: Oh, did You know that Atari Fan No 1 Krzys K. from TS was a real guy? Who sadly passed away in a car accident years ago?
I never had doubts about him being real, but I didn't know about the accident.

On the one hand , there was 'Crash!' magazine.
On the other, there was 'Zzap!' magazine.
You have to be an 80's child to know what I'm on about....
Best magazine art ever. Ollie Frey was a gaming magazine god.

I get Edge and Retro Gamer through work. Though to be honest, I never really read much of what's in them.
I find both are too console oriented to cater to my tastes. Retro Gamer used to be a lot better, with a larger focus on stuff like Commodore 64 and Amiga, but these days it's mostly Sega and Nintendo. These days, retro seems to be all about Japan and maybe a small handful of US developers as well. It's as if Europe and large parts of the US scene has been erased from history.

I've just discovered a massive bookstore near my house sells Retro Gamer for $110 HKD (around $14) and Edge for the same price. It's not a bad deal considering subscriptions to international locations cost a shitton. The newest issue was the Wolf3D one... I think.

Here in Australia we have the very awesome, PC Powerplay. Probably THE PC gaming magazine worth reading. It's been in publication since 1996, I believe, has some really good opinion pieces, a little bit of tech, and the usual gaming stuff.
We also have the multi-platform Hyper.
Plethora of "official Australian" console magazines, and Atomic, which is probably for the uber geeks rather than gamers. Still a good read.

stonebro: Any fellow Norwegians remember the magazines we had in the 90s?
TEKNA was one I believe. I think there was one before that too, that I actually subscribed to. I would love to find some of the old issues again, but it looks like they've all vanished by now.
Conversely, if you should have a bunch of them in an acceptably readable state, I might actually be willing to buy them.

I've got lots of old magazines. I won't sell them though. But I can provide pictures to see if they ring any bells :)
DNH Klubben - the magazine that guided me to Betrayal at Krondor, Monkey Island and Dune 2, among many other games.
TEKNO
Giga
PC Hjemme
PC Play - the magazine that included a 2-cd with demo versions of all games listed in the magazine. But some of the text is danish, so maybe it was available all over Scandinavia?
