Red_Avatar: It's a bit depressing to see all those wet-nosed teenagers on forums talking about Counter Strike as if it's a dinosaur of a game - heck, even games released in 2004, which I still consider relatively recent in terms of a retro gamer, get treated as if they're the music equivalent of 70s music ...
Last year, when I lived at dormitory, one day I was playing Half-Life 2 and my roommate's friend came to visit him. We started talking and he asked me what I am playing. I told him and it went like this: Him: "Half-Life 2? But why? It's old game."
Me: "No, it's only from 2005 or so."
Him: "Yes, exactly, old game."
And he was around 23 years old.

I was just playing Blood II for a few hours and it DOES feel old - a completely different game than anything modern. No scripted sequences, no flashy animations to carry a story, etc.

For me... probably Halo. I might get a lot of hate for this... but...
...both are icons of their respective genres
...both have tons of fans from around the world
...yet I think both are overrated and do not 'get' why they're so huge. I mean for Star Wars, it had a nicely imagined fantasy world and good special effects for its time, but I thought the movie to be cliched and the plot to be generic. Then again, that may be because I arrived late at the Star Wars scene - I only watched it for the first (and only) time like 5 years ago in university, so I don't have that whole nostalgia thing working for me there. Therefore I guess I wasn't all that fair on Star Wars since maybe it wasn't that it was cliched and generic, but that all the other movies I've seen prior to having seen Star Wars which had been influenced by it, thereby making it appear as though it's more generic than it actually was at the time it was originally released (if that makes sense). In any case, that's how I feel about the movie now...
Sounds good actually. I HATE too many scripted sequences in games. I thought the original Call of Duty was too heavily scripted, but then I played Black Ops a couple of weeks ago. I think I played for like 3 or 4 hours on regular difficulty, and basically I just ran around for 2 minutes; in-game cut-scene; kill one dude; in-game cut-scene; cinematic cut-scene; walk from point A to point B; in-game cut-scene; shoot another 2 dudes; cinematic cut-scene; level completed. The entire time I was just like... 'What? Am I even playing this game, or is it just playing itself?' So I played another couple of levels or so and now I don't think I'll ever touch that game again.

Probably Super Mario/Zelda, or Doom in the PC realm. I don't think they're essential gaming, no game is, but they are games I would be surprised if someone told me they never played.

No Zelda and Doom here. :p (I guess my early days were mostly with RTS games and some simulations / management games) (lots of FPSs too, but never Doom (haven't played any of it yet))
