Good one.
I'll throw in Lego Island too.

Lego Island

Note how the article says it's compatible with every Microsoft OS including Windows 8 (?)

deus ex 1 and 2 there were moment when i stood in the game and looked around the environment changes so much from time to time once you are in a city with people around then sometimes its the underground to airports

max payne 1 & 2 looked good too
System Shock 2 is the creepiest game I played.
I haven't played much of it, and completely skipped the first one but Bioshock 2 does a good job of environment.

Just the whole Aesthetic to rapture, and the pretty sweet Water Effects. Then there's the slow paced clunking of subject delta as he stalks the corridors, and the shadows he casts.

I really like that Atmosphere.

Batman Arkham Asylum did a good job too IMHO, just the feel of Arkham, especially the part where you go to the morgue, it's quite dirty and gritty. Gives me the creeps. But what do you expect from a place named after the asylum in Cthulhu mythos?
Anyone remember the Ocean House Hotel from Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines ?
As far as atmosphere goes, that part was the best in the whole game. It was creepy, scary, and awesome, and pretty much the only one like that. I don't know if they made other attempts to some similar design throughout the game, because nothing even came close.

GameRager: Good one.
Indeed.
Fatal Frame 2 and System Shock 2 for me. Very rarely does a game scare me, and those two games do.
Thief, System Shock 2 and Dead Space are the scariest games I have completed. Amnesia, Penumbra and others are probably worse but honestly I can't play them.

As for immersive in general Morrowind is probably the most immersive game of all time for me. I feel like that world was just perfectly presented and realized. I acknowledge the technical limitations, like people standing in place all the time, harm immersion but for me it's more about world design and freedom than AI.
I'm old-school, but I found the first 2 Fallouts & Arcanum to be my most immersive experiences. The atmosphere just really drew me in to where I believed the worlds were real. I got so hooked on the Fallout atmosphere, I borrowed every dvd I could from my local library on similar themes.

As far as just creepy, King's Quest 4's haunted house & graveyard section. Once I got through it I was fine, but the anticipation of the unknown drove me crazy.

Again, I'm old-school & I realize the graphics don't compare to today's gaming technology (especially KQ4), but if we're just talking atmosphere then these are my picks.

I've played both Penumbra games, they're eerie, and very atmospheric. I'd say they're like Dead Space and System shock 2. Haven't played Amnesia and won't play it either.
The Penumbra/Amnesia games have me craning my neck around my monitor to see what's around the next corner. Can't get more immersive than that. I only play these at night, with headphones, all lights off. Oh, and only while my wife's at work, so I don't get that ill-timed tap on my shoulder that would make me launch through the ceiling.
And holding my breath in all the Thief games so the guards wouldn't hear me...

KingofGnG: Heart of Darkness :-P
While I probably wouldn't put it in the same category of "creepy" as most other games mentioned here, I agree that it's a fun game! :)

Wishbone: I think Sanitarium has a very disturbing atmosphere. It's not scary as such, it's just a kind of pervasive feeling of wrongness that is very effective in setting the mood of the game.
Already played that one; "The Mansion" was my favorite chapter, no shocking moments but sad and creepy atmosphere, very well done.

Then I guess it's a good thing that I only just bought the KQ4-6 package yesterday, isn't it? :D (although I didn't expect it to be creepy).

Right now I'm very intrigued about Penumbra, since it seems to be fairly similar to Amnesia but with less demanding system specs (demo of the first part works fine for me). I might also try to get a second hand copy of Fatal Frame for the PS2. I was actually looking for good games I could play on it, thanks to everyone who suggested it.

Keep the suggestions coming or just chat about the subject! :)
