Hi, I have a work in progress GOGMix that I'm currently putting together. This list is to showcase games available on GOG which have a native binary available for playing the game on linux. This of course includes source ports.

If youl have any to add, please let me know here.

Awesome. Any chance you'll put this list on the GOGwiki?

HGiles: Awesome. Any chance you'll put this list on the GOGwiki?
Indeed, say a list-type page which links to each game on the wiki?

I could undertake that, though I'm still researching which are still available and where the pertaining urls are.

It would be great if you could. Don't worry too muich about having all the links & etc - wikis are permanent works in progress anyway.
I wonder, did I really manage to pinpoint them all or does no one run linux anymore?

You missed a few:

Urquan Masters AKA Star Control 2
http://happypenguin.org/show?The%20Ur-Quan%20Masters

Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries (never tried)
Seven Kingdoms 2 (never tried)
http://7kfans.com/

Unreal 1 (never tried, looks old)
http://happypenguin.org/show?Unreal%20I%20Installer

HoMM 3 (never tried, probably still incomplete)
http://forum.vcmi.eu/portal.php

Jagged Alliance 2 (never tried)
http://happypenguin.org/show?Jagged%20Alliance%202%20-%20Stracciatella

Serious Sam TFE (never tried, looks old)
Serious Sam TSE (never tried, looks old)
http://happypenguin.org/show?Serious%20Sam%3A%20The%20First%20Encounter
http://www.happypenguin.org/show?Serious%20Sam:%20The%20Second%20Encounter

Kingpin (never tried, looks old)
http://icculus.org/~ravage/kingpin/

There are also linux blobs for Shogo, Descent 3, HoMM3, Alpha Centuari, Sacred, Gorky17, Creatures, Knights & Merchants, and Postal 2 but those must be purchased separately.

Edit: fixed many errors :)

Snickersnack: Unreal 1 (never tried, looks old)
http://happypenguin.org/show?Unreal%20I%20Installer
The version from oldunreal.com works. I tried it. The last version is from June.

Freespace can be played using fs_port in Freespace 2 or using the sourcecode from icculus.org (German Instructions).

There appears to be an engine recreation project for Settlers 2. Don't know if it works: siedler25.org.

I would recommend gargoyle over frotz for the Zork games, although the last time I checked it didn't support Zork Zero. It has pretty text rendering.

Wow, thanks so much for pointing those out! I'll add them ASAP.

I cannot include this game as it's stand alone, the assets and the engine both now belong to that project, hence, GOG does not need to be involved with it. The engine itself will probably play the content purchased on GOG... It's out of scope in this list I believe.

Snickersnack: Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries (never tried)
Seven Kingdoms 2 (never tried)

This is in the same state as the above game, the assets (except the music) are GPL and can be downloaded from your link above. The only thing not GPL is the music, but it is freely downloadable. I think this one may be a good candidate for GOG to turn into a free download.

Snickersnack: Unreal 1 (never tried, looks old)
http://happypenguin.org/show?Unreal%20I%20Installer
I had this one on the list but believed that it was only available as the whole package when Loki was around. I think the downloads from oldunreal.com are the genuine thing, so back on the list it goes.

Snickersnack: HoMM 3 (never tried, probably still incomplete)
http://forum.vcmi.eu/portal.php
I hesitate to add this one because the site is not too specific on what this does. As I don't own the game (yet) I couldn't be for sure. I'll add it regardless, hoping someone pipes up to let me know the status.

Snickersnack: Jagged Alliance 2 (never tried)
http://happypenguin.org/show?Jagged%20Alliance%202%20-%20Stracciatella
This one's odd, no real information or mention of *nix compatibility and I don't own the game, hence. Anyone have JA2? =)

Serious Sam TSE (never tried, looks old)

Difficult on these ones, I own the Second Encounter, but not the first, I'll try these betas .. I'm just thinking these were Loki games that have newer binaries out there that aren't available for d/l.
avatar
Snickersnack: Kingpin (never tried, looks old)
http://icculus.org/~ravage/kingpin/
This one's just an installer that relies on Wine. I think there are others out there for games like COD amongst others so I can't add it as it's not native.

Aye, these others would be sweet to add, but you're right. Full bundle items which aren't available to buy anymore, or cost more on other sites.

Thanks for all your research!

The freespace port seems to be incomplete, I'll try it when I finally buy the game, do you own it? Maybe you could see if it works.

Thanks for the settlers link, I'll add it. As for the gargoyle suggestion, the engine has some licensing issues, though completely playable it will not support games like zork while encumbered by licensing problems. Though anyone can run it on linux much like the other binary blobs I suggest so this is why I suggested frotz.

Unreal was never ported, UT was (Unreal didn't even support OpenGL). The engine was then back ported to run Unreal, but this was never a product.

This is all from my memory though, so I may be mistaken.

I run Linux on all but one rig. Yeah, I have a Win 7 machine, not every problem is a nail, occasionally need something besides my trusty hammer:)

Easiert to find compatible games if you do the following:

On the product page itself, add this tag at the very end of the page:
[[category:Linux]]

I will link it to the OS Section then and you can browse Linux compatible games really easy :)

EDIT: I set up an example on Arx Fatalis :)

Why not put yourself through hell getting everything to work on linux? =) I gave up the Winbloze experience back in 2003 for good and that's when I got hostile. I've purchased every game ever made to be compatible with linux though unfortunately Loki etc never made it long enough for me to know about them. They went out of business before going 100% linux desktop.

I now find myself testing these games for the linux community anyway =). Man it's gonna be expensive ... heh.

I will do this after I think my list is somewhat close to what reality dictates. I hope to test and also provide installation instructions for Linux-ers.

Umm, because, as you said, it's hell (and ultimately not valuable enough to me to spend my limited lifespan doing). Most people can already game for cheap, really cheap in fact. I'd rather spend time working on problems that don't have solutions, or at least not solutions that normal people have access to.

That's me, I understand people disagreeing, that's fine. Win 7 works fine for gaming. I wouldn't want to develop software on it (and indeed, I don't) but for gaming it's really no big deal to me. I still support folks who release Linux games whenever I can, but it's been years since I realized that was a battle that I was never going to be able to fight and win.

Serious Sam was ported by Ryan C. Gordon without any Loki participation. He gave the code to Croteam where it was left unused. There are no newer version.

I have only tried the first few missions and only single player using the icculus.org version. I had to make the change mentioned in the comments section to have any sound. I played the rest in fs_port.

What licensing issues do you mean? The wrong address of the FSF appears to be fixed. I think the old inform games that use grapics weren't supported because of some oddities in the glk interface.
