mrcrispy83: Going to guess that Lands of Lore is like this. Haven't played it.
avatar
Leroux: Yes and no. It appears similar on the outside because it has the same perspective and because both are dungeon crawlers with much combat and a few puzzle elements. But contrary to the open world and turn-based combat of the M&M series, Lands of Lore is linear with real-time combat (just like Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master, Anvil of Dawn, Stonekeep, Legend of Grimrock etc.).

pimpmonkey2382: Only thing I can think of is wizardry 6,7,8.
avatar
Leroux: True, the Wizardry series is probably the closest match. If turn-based combat is not a requirement, the second best fit would be Ultima Underworld and the Elder Scrolls games.
Thanks for all the help. I was really looking for FPP grid like RPG very close to MM1-5. Open World if at all possible. I started playing these back when MM2 came out so I was able to enjoy MM1 at the time and I completed all of them and stopped playing when 6 came out because I didnt like the drastic change.. I tried playing the Wizardry series early on but was boring compared to MM because it seemed, (If I remember correctly) alot of it was going down in the same dungeon and no Over World map travelling from town to town.

trentonlf: Look at Disciples one and two

nhaskins1: I liked both the early Might and Magic (1-5) and the Heroes of Might and Magic ( 3 and 4). I am looking for grid based if that helps narrow the search, not free roaming.
6,7,8 pretty much is open world.

nhaskins1: I'm not sure if there is a list already that I missed but I really like that FPP open world RPG classic style. Any recommendations on others like the early Might and Magic series?

Thanks, those would be good to check out too since I liked Heroes of M & M as well.
wizardry starting with 6 is pretty much just like M&M for the most part.

Alright I got Wizardry 6 and 7. Going to get started on 6 now. Thanks and I'll take any other recommendations!

The character creation is much more complicated but in a good way though. :P
Stay away from Ishar.

French RPGs do not age gracefully

I am looking for First Person perspective(Grid based, not free roam), turn based, open world, or at least not strictly linear.
Bump to find out if you liked your purchase. :P
Dragon Wars.

PetrusOctavianus: Dragon Wars.
That too, wish GOG would get that one somehow.

In fact I remember having dragon wars complete in box at one time.

Is it bad that I'm pumped for Grimoire?

Can you actually create a party in Dragon Wars? I tried emulating the Amiga version early this year and it started you off with a completely pre-set party in purgatory or wherever it is you start. It kinda killed my enthusiasm.

Yes, you can create your own party.
But I would recommend the pregens for a first time player.

I'll have to check out Grimoire. Never heard this one. Is it available on Steam?

Grimoire hasn't actually come out yet, only a demo is available. It's been in the works for 17-18 years... supposedly it will be released in the near future, but I'm not holding my breath. See for instance this Escapist article from February last year:
After 17 years in development, the ridiculously old-school RPG Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar is coming in May [2013] whether you like it or not.
Another year has passed since then, and still no Grimoire.
