Hi, guys, I want to collect some suggestions to which games are similar to Disciples 2: turnbased, 2d graphics with nice combat animations, hero progression, units progression, strategic elements. I like HOMM series, but what about the rest of them?

Oh I forgot to add, they need to be mediaval fantasy genre with shiny armors, swords and monsters.

Age of Wonders & Eador (original doesn't have many animations) comes to mind and if you're stingy like me, there is The Battle for Wesnoth (also without full animation) which is free.

Edit- Warlock: Master of the Arcane

Edit2- Warlock renders polygonal graphics but is otherwise a 2-d game.

While those are all good games, I wouldn't say Battle for Wesnoth is quite the same style. Definitely in the same genre, but not the same style.

Still worth a look though.
I also like Expeditions: Conquistador, and the stuff recommended before.
I'd settle for anything with the delicious dark fantasy atmosphere of Disciples 2, but I don't know if there is any other game that comes close to creating such an intoxicating atmosphere :P The original Age of Wonders is brilliant in its own right, but it goes for a totally different kind of high fantasy atmosphere. Other games that remind me of Disciples 2 (only wrt the atmosphere) :
Lords of Magic
TA Kingdoms - never played it though
Warhammer : Mark of Chaos
Kingdom under Fire - never played it either

I think these are all real-time games.

Well very few games have the atmosphere & game-play mix of Disciples 2 (even the inferior sequels don't get it right).

Yup, that is why I said "only wrt atmosphere". I'm only throwing it out there since the most captivating element for me from Disciples 2 is its unique atmosphere :P
Definitely not the sequels :-P Which is a shame, because their art style is quite breathtaking. They tried to ape heroes of might and magic 3 series, which however required a lot of weird changes in order to work with Disciples formula and ... Well, don't really work regardless.

I don't think there actually are games like Disciples 2. There's Eador and Age of Wonders that Negatus has mentioned, then there's Heroes of Might and Magic series, but even that's a long shot. Disciples is fairly unique.
