Licurg: I recall reading about a game called "Heart of Darkness", maybe it's made after the book?
avatar
Aalda11: There definitely was a game called "Heart of Darkness", I think it was a side-scrolling platformer.
I remember that! If its the one I'm thinking of it was good but notorious for being next to impossible. I'm gonna head over to GSpot and look this up.

tinyE: Orson Welles did a flat up film version of HOD but I havn't seen it. Last time I read it was college, shortly after it was written. :P
Haha.

I re-read it a month or so ago for about the 5th time. As rich as it is, there are so many slippery things about the book. Something about the archaic style that makes the story slide from my brain. When I'm reading it I like it, though.

As to the topic at hand, I can't say I know of any off the top of my head, though I have heard that Spec Ops has been associated with it.
Found it!

And NO, this has NOTHING to do with the book.

Yeah...but holy cow, "original concept by Eric Chahi" - the freakin' genius behind Another World. I guess it wasn't just any old side-scrolling platformer then :)

jackalKnight: Maybe Bioshock 4 should focus on the Third World/Primitive lack of government, since they've deconstructed most First World governments by now. Would a Bioshock inspired by Heart of Darkness work?
avatar
qre3o: Im guessing bioshock is more inspired by "Twenty Thousand Leagues under the sea"
Bioshock 1 deconstructs Ayn Rand
Bioshock Infinite deconstructs DeToqueville's "American Exceptionalism" (at least how Americans perceive it)

How does the book hold up to today?

Hahaha! Sorry to imply I've read it. I know enough about Ayn Rand's philosophy to know I disagree vehemently so it's not really in my to-read pile.

But if you'll take some second hand accounts I hear that with things like character's speeches going on for ten pages at a time it's not really a story, it's more of a manifesto, so the question is whether or not you're interested in reading about objectivism.
Heart of the Alien, Hearts of Iron, Carnage Heart, Vandal Hearts, Kingdom Hearts, Wing Commander III, Kings Quest V. The Castlevania and Zelda series also make extensive use of hearts and various states of low lighting.

Have a happy Valentine's day! Or a dark one, if you prefer!

According to Wikipedia, System Shock 2 was originally inspired by Heart of Darkness before it was made a System Shock sequel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_shock_2#Development

when the game is released on GOG they might include extras to confirm that

This is how I see Bioshock as well.

Boring and strained.

I dunno about Atlas Shrugged but Bioshock story is great.

And I'm not sure it "deconstructs" anything, or at least it's not so black and white, if you follow the journals and such. I personally find the whole concept "no gods, no governments" quite appealing - except, of course, for the whole "people-will-turn-to-zombie-freaks-and-start-murdering-each-other" thing :))
What do you guys think of "Heart of Darkness" as a book?

The ideas and themes were interesting but the writing didn't appeal to me.

My biggest beef with it were the two first person narrators, you have one person narrating in first person about another telling a story, also in first person. A couple of times when I was puzzled about something I'd re-read the passage and realize that it had sneakily changed narrators half-way through the paragraph.

But like I said, the themes were interesting and it did a good job building up Kurtz's character as well as Marlow's meeting with him.
