Barnell: [:::]
Fantasy General? (I can't find pictures because SSI made a game of the same name in 1996)
King's Bounty? (Screenshot)
No mages, but what about Realms?

Heck. I'll chip in one that's been bugging me since forever as well. A space fighter sim from back in the 486 days; it was luridly neon and most everything was bright green, orange, or red, although I think there was also simple Goraud shading.

The throttle controls were the numbers across the top of the screen and were on a logarithmic scale. Anything over 4 or 5 was "hyperspace" speed and you'd fly between planets or, if your reaction times were bad enough, right into them and blow up.

I don't recall any economic elements, although I believe I only ever had a demo of this game, so it could be there was more to it. You could fly around suns and planets, go on raids on defense structures on the planets, blow virtually everything up, and get in furballs either in space or in atmosphere.

It sounds like an Elite clone--it was very possibly one of the very heavily "inspired by" games of the shovelware era--but I haven't come across in more than a decade.

Any clues?

Starglider?

TheEnigmaticT: ...
Retribution?
The graphical quality of the game was somewhere between those two titles. Somewhat more polys than Starglider, but no smooth curves of the terrain a la Retribution.

It’s cool. I think that last one might be a lost cause.

I got no idea what game you’re trying to remember.
I can remember games with space combat or planet raids but it's hard to find one with both.

Thiev: Epic
You know, the game looked like a garish version of Epic, sans any kind of story whatsoever. I think there was a title screen with some thin story, but that was about it.

Thanks for the effort, though. I have long suspected it was some random shareware that was very unpopular so no one's ever played it. -_-
I doubt its it, but A.G.E. is one that comes to mind. I haven't played it myself, but I have seen some screenies that looked very vibrant.
