Am I the only one, that bought some games on GOG just to clear conscience from long long time ago when I was playing pirated copies of those games as a kid with "no money"? Or are there more of us?
Kingpin

Only game I ever pirated and the only one I ever will. I still feel like a huge asshole for it.
More, definitely more.
I make it a habit to not pirate games so no haven't bought any to clear any conscience.

You are not alone.. I have a sad history with piracy, actively playing them since 90's, I started with the SNES with the floppy disk device "super wild card", to the PS1 burned cd's.. Then it quiet down around 2k's, just collecting roms for Ds mostly..

I am proud to be over it today for several years already, about 3 I would say.. There is no illegal material or content at my home to be found, not a single one, I am also careful with PDF manuals and guides I get, and music OST to own them legitimately..

Only very, very rarely do I download again a rom to play, applying a fan translation patch, or rare imports / unsold products, the second-hand prices being usually unhealthy..

Leading to.. A kind of obsession about it, now close to 1300 games and counting!! :o

Don't take me wrong, I don't pirate games anymore since I ended studies and got a job...
Nope, I buy many games just for that. Knowing I won't re-play them, but paying a debt, even at a symbolic level. It's not only about GOG, but also other games, movies, comics, CDs...

The problem is, when we're at the most "playing" age, we usually don't have the means to get our games legally. So, we kinda accumulate moral debts, by "stealing" what we would not have been able to buy. And, well, afterwards, it's a bit too late to set it right. Even if you overcome your disinterest, the compensations are usually futile (what does gog offer to the original authors -when anything at all- compared to what they would have got when support was crucial ?).

So yes, to clear conscience. We do. It doesn't work that much, but, we have the "at least" to hold onto. :-/

I agree. If you only ever pirated one game, it should've been Spore .
Yeah I had a crapload of pirated games installed on my PC before I found GOG, mostly just ISO's and cracks. But I ended up uninstalling them all and buying them on GOG, and then re-installing the GOG version. In fact I still do it, I still have many, many "abandonware" DOS games and so on set-up with D-Fend Reloaded and the like, but I'll get rid of them if they appear on GOG.

Not really conscience so much as just that I have a bit of an OCD for owning the "official" copy of all my games, also GOG's games are easier to install and set-up.

It would be funny if your only game would´ve been "Pirates!", but "Kingpin: Life of Crime" will do :D

Absolutely!
And with all these promos and great releases it's kinda dumb not to buy anything

I admit that I've bought a couple of GOG games with the idea that I'll then play the superior Amiga version with an emulator.

No, but these are games that I don't think have shown up for sale since I got into buying old titles a few years back (not that I've scoured the internet): Karateka, Akalabeth, Castle Wolfenstein, that sort of thing.

Guilt? A little bit. I can now look upon it as those games being that first hit of crack cocaine the dealer gives away to get the new customer hooked. They certainly got my money out of it over the years, and that early $60-120 has turned into $10,000+ spent on games and again that much on hardware.
I've not done that with video games, but I have bought hundreds of dollars of anime to try to whittle away at the thousands of hours I pirated. I'm getting better at that.
