jefequeso: If quality were easily objective and measurable, then opinions on things would be uniform
among people of similar intelligence and analytical abilities. This is not the case. I don't
necessarily disagree that there is such thing as objective truth, or that certain objective
qualities can be measured, but I don't think any one person is capable of doing so in a
completely objective fashion. With regards to videogames and art in general, it's
absolutely ridiculous to claim that you have an easy system for measuring how objectively
good something is. No such system exists, because as creatures with inherently subjective
outlooks on life we're incapable of definitively identifying objective truth.

anjohl: Well wait a minute, if taste is subjective, why is it that noone is allowed to not worship Deus Ex,
System Shock, or whatever other game the internet tells us is good?
I never said that. All I said was "objectivity must have horrible taste." It was not intended to be taken as anything other than a strongly stated opinion to contest your own strongly stated opinion. An off-hand rib. Was it a stupid thing to say? Yes, in hindsight it was. Like everyone else, I sometimes say stupid stuff that I should have thought about more. Browsing through my post history should turn up plenty of great examples of this.

You're free to hate Deus Ex and System Shock 2, I'm free to think they're great. I'm also free to think you're a rather silly person for not recognizing what makes them great. Obviously I believe that my view is the correct one. At the same time, I also recognize that I'm not the one and only bearer of the truth, and that I can't definitively say that I'm right.
Dune 2
I cannot possibly count hours I spent on that title but I don't want to play it ever again. I want to think about it as a almost perfect game, one of the best I've ever played. And right now it's pretty much unplayable due to the horrific controls. It aged badly. REALLY badly. I know that there are some remakes which basically add modern RTS interface but that just sounds like a desecration. No, thanks very much, I'll stick to my memories

I was gonna say this one but you beat me to it. RTS controls have improved a lot since those days...

I think we may talk about the gameplay as well. AFAIR almost 100% missions in Dune 2 were identical - build up your base, crate an unstoppable army, destroy the enemy base/bases. It also got improved over those... oh my... it's 20 years already!
Quick question... how in the hell did this topic turn into a philosophical debate? Seriously... I made this topic as a fun little look at how we have progressed as gamers & how our mind tricks us into seeing games from our youth as being on-par with those of today.... & then it turns into this...

Because...umm...

evidence suggests that it's late and I'm not thinking entirely clearly, I guess? I dunno. That's my defense, anyway.
Back on topic!

This is a bit different. This game is only about 5 years old - Bioshock.
I absolutely loved Bioshock when I first played it. I even put it in my top 5 favorite games ever.
Now I can't stand to play it. It is boring as eff. I find it clunky, repetitive, too small, and too straightforward. At the time, it seemed like a game full of choices. Now, the only choices I seem to see are "how many different ways can I kill this guy?"

For me, Bioshock has failed the test of time faster than any game I have ever played.
How about Unreal? When it first came out, it was lke a revolution in 3d graphics (at least that's how I remember it). now look at it. Look at the monsters and their smooshy polygon faces. This was once considered amazingly realistic!

The gameplay is alright, but it's not above and beyond other FPS's, IMHO.

Aww, I love Unreal! Played it for the first time only about a year or two ago, and it 's one of my favorite FPSs of all time. Love the whole ambiance of the game. I also think that the combat is pretty unique, in that most encounters involve very few enemies (in fact, a huge part of the game is made up of 1 on 1 fights). It makes firefights feel more like duels than anything else. Plus, all the weapons are awesome and have interesting uses.

Actually, the longer I sit here and think about it, the more I'm getting the itch to play it again. Maybe it was a bad example. The graphics are still WAY different from what I remember from 1999.

Y'know... funny thing is, I actually thought about Mentioning a somewhat recent game myself... That game being GTA IV. I thought it was really good at the time but, with more recent games like Sleeping Dogs doing wonders for the Sandbox genre, the game feels dated as all hell nowadays. The driving is horrible, the combat is mediocre & the lack of visual indicator that you are dying is truly off-putting. It is kinda amazing how far we've come in such a short time.

Hehe, I was going to post this. Yes, Dune 2 was fantastic, and I spent SO many hours on that game. Now, it's an unplayable mess, even though the game itself hasn't changed at all. And yes, it's the controls and only the controls which ruin the game.

I for one would love to see a modern control scheme added to the game. Then I could have my memories and play them too ;-)
Has anyone played Goldeneye recently? I get the feeling the controls would seem pretty awkward by today's standards.

I played it a year or so ago.... & its kinda horrible. Its not really the game's fault so much as its the fault of the technology (I.e. the N64 controller) that it was built around.

It's a terribly broken game with pretty crappy controls, but it's still a wildly fun party game.
