This is a topic I've had on my mind for awhile now (well at least since I beat Sonic Adventure 2: HD)... Far too often I hear gamers going on & on about how a particular game is supposedly the be all end all of gaming when in reality it is an extremely outdated & cumbersome experience. I can't blame those people though as the words they speak are often spoke through a rose filter (much like I did with SA2). That being said... have you ever went back & played a game that you once loved only to find that it was nowhere near as good as you remembered it being?
ultima underworld.
Cinemaware's Wings on amiga was a bit of a disappointment for me when I played it again. I stlil enjoyed it, but I remember it as being so much more fluid to play than what it actually is. I still have hopes for the remake though.
Diablo 2, for sure, which is why I suspect so many still think so highly of it. It was amazing for its time, simply it had a lot of nasty warts which other games managed to remove from their game play.

Note: I know there's exceptions, Frater:)

What exactly about Diablo 2 needs to be left to nostalgia? I played it a few years back and thought it was great for a loot grind.

Painfully, just about everything, if you like that particular ARPG formula, it's been done so much better in enough subsequent titles now that it's almost tragic for Diablo 2 itself.

Hmm, go get a beta of Path of Exile, play it. That is honestly the single, best answer I can give you, and you'll have a metric fuck ton of fun along the way:)
Probably a lot, but they still have historic value.

Off the top of my head I tried playing the original Command & Conquer again a while back and it... well, it's pretty old.
I found X-wing to not be nearly as much fun as I remembered it.
Zelda 1: "Puzzles" are not very fun and it mainly comes down to trial & error. Combat is shallow at best.

Command & Conquer: The game just feels shallow and some things take longer than they have to (like unloading resources). Cutscenes are still great, but the gameplay has long since been surpassed.

Elder Scrolls: Arena: Buggy, poorly balanced and with awkward controls. This game might have been groundbreaking for its time, but it has long since been surpassed.

Heroes of Might & Magic 1 Again, a game that long since has been surpassed. The later HoMMs just does everything HoMM 1 does, but better in every single way.

Final Liberation While the cutscenes remain just as great today as they were when it was released, but the core gameplay is not all that impressive.
low rated
In (objective) order:

1) Deus Ex
2) System Shock 2
3) Another World

5) Any FMV game
6) Dragon's Lair
7) Most NES games
8) All Atari games
9) Street Fighter II World Warrior
10) Mortal Kombat II

Reply on Zelda: Dude there almost were no puzzles at all, and this game is released in the 80s, what kind of combat do you expect?

Matter of definition, but finding certain dungeons (7 & 8 in particular), and also finding your way through the forest could easily be considered to be puzzles. As could finding the secrets.
Also, what would I expect from a title released during the 80's in terms of combat?
Simple but not shallow combat. And the combat in Zelda was shallow.
Ogre battle 64, still a good game, but enjoyed it far less than I did when I was younger

Objective order, huh?

Apparently objectivity has really crappy taste.
