Gamersgate isn't a bad site at all. I have quite a few games on there and I think I will use them more than Steam because it's just nicer. And Impulse. They kick ass.

I've looked at various other options, but never made much use of them, as I really don't want a lot of stuff spread over many platforms.
Steam was used primarily, until GOG filled a niche I was after. But until GG/Impulse/Other gets a LOT of stuff I can't get elsewhere, it's hard to shift there. Even if they are better, I have too much invested at current locations.

Gamersgate is a lot better than Steam, although they do have their problems, the biggest one being the unreliable payment system. They rely to heavily on third party solutions that don't always work.
There have been times when I have been unable to complete a credit card purchase due to problems with PayNova and I know of someone else who has never been able to get the Clikc and Buy option to work.
But I have never a had an trouble with their support, who have always been ready to listen and help -- and reply far faster than Valve =). Although some people do complain that they never get answers (I wonder if that's due to spam filters, of them misunderstanding the Game Tutor system).

So technically people can just exchange games at any given point?
Example, some one has a game i want and vice versa. so we trade, install and trade back.

It's possible, but then, Valve have *always* been slow to respond. I expect the more likely answer is that GG employ a few more support staff and a far faster email system than an overly complex ticket system designed to deter asking questions rather than providing help.

It should also be noted that the GamersGate staff shuns the activation limits on titles in their catalog; while the limits are unfortunately still in place, if you run out you can ask support for more and they will hand them out like candy, whereas the publisher's own tech support gives out only one or two at a time and treats you like a suspected pirate during the whole process. It certainly seems like GamersGate is the best place to buy such heavy-DRM titles.

I must admit that GG has been tempting me of late, how are they with compatibility of their older titles? Near-GOG levels of 'best possible effort because we like to deliver a useable product' or closer to the steam style of 'it loads up? yeah that'll do'?

It's not about trust or anti-piracy measures it's about DISTRIBUTION.

Doesn't GG still use internet activation to install their games? So I guess GG could still detect any abuse of this trust and potentially ban the account...

GamersGate desperately need to start up some content servers around the world if they want to become a major player. As it is, they're doing pretty well, but I'm convinced that their uneven download speeds are going to bottleneck their success.
The blue coins system is astonishingly vague - as near as I can tell, you are given a certain percentage of any purchase you make as blue coins, and you also seem to receive them for writing reviews and helping people out. Unfortunately, the exact rewards for these acts are not made clear anywhere.
