Has anyone played any of these point-and-click adventures currently on sale over at GamersGate and would like to share his/her opinion on them?

Edna & Harvey: The Breakout
Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World
Jolly Rover

(I'll probably pass on Jolly Rover because of the SecuRom DRM, but I'd like to hear your opinion anyway. And if you'd like to recommend another dicounted adventure I didn't list here, feel free to do so.)

Kaptain Brawe is cheaper on Steam with the current sale!

Hm, for me it says 3.99 EUR on Steam, 2.80 EUR on GamersGate. I wish I knew if teh GamersGate version has any kind of DRM (I only get See bundled products, regardless of where I click). Did you play it, by chance?
Only played Jolly Rover on Steam - can only verify that it works - rather it is good or not is subjective.

Look before you leap - check the Review and Game Tutor sections first to see if the games have any known issues.

I've been purchasing too many digital games recently only to have problems and stumble into a half abandoned discussion forum for the game with the same problem documented six months ago.
i only played the first episode of brawe, wasnt bad but short. so cant say about the other episodes.

edna and harvey is a superb adventure that could match any good adventure game
of the old days. playing the sequel atm, translated, harveys new eyes
Jolly Rover does -not- have any Securom on Steam. It's just, well, Steam.
Brawe is supposed to be very short. But yeah, I'm still kind of interested in it too at that price.

I'm wondering if I should play the original, in German, which would make the most sense for me as a native speaker. On the other hand, comparing gameplay videos on youtube, I somehow find the English localization more enjoyable (which is probably a sacrilege, but it seems to be more professional), so I'm a bit on the fence there. I'd buy it this instance if I knew both languages were included, but I suspect the GamersGate version is just the English translation.

It does on GamersGate apparantly. And I've got bad experiences with GamersGate games using SecuRom, so in that regard Steam might be the better choice. But it would still require online activation and that's the other thing I'm trying to avoid.

I found Edna & Harvey to be extremely funny (in terms of the jokes; the story is rather mature, actually). Much of the game is situated in a mental institution and, therefore, pretty crazy.
You will find yourself trying to combine all of your numerous inventory items just to hear Edna comment on it - there is great voice acting for almost everything (I can only account for the German version, though).
The puzzles tend to be on the difficult side, but are doable, imho (with a few exceptions. It's been a while, so I don't remember every detail).
Graphics are dated, of course, but well... this is the GOG forum, so that should not be an issue, I guess ;)

Overall, I liked it a lot. Edna&Harvey and The Book of Unwritten Tales renewed my interest in adventure games these days (and I followed them up with Machinarium and The Longest Journey).

I skimmed some reviews before posting: seems like the English translation has some mistakes, but is ok otherwise. Maybe someone played the English version?

EDIT: Apparently, they released a version with dual audio by now, but I don't think the gamersgate version has it: http://www.amazon.de/Edna-bricht-aus-Special-Limited/dp/B00577T53O

Um... a Steam account does not require anything but logging in, which I guess could be counted as an activation, but you aren't limited to five times per machine and you have to sacrifice a child to get more activations, like Securom.

Really, sometimes this is better than nothing.

Oh great. Another seemingly good game ruined by a bad translation. :(

etna87: ~snip~
Thanks!

Coincidentally, I only just finished "The Book of Unwritten Tales" today. :) That one has superb German voice acting though, as far as I can I tell only professional and very well known voice-actors were involved and it was a huge factor in why I liked it. Not so sure about the voice-acting in Edna yet ... That every combination gets a different response is great though, I loved that about "Ben There Dan That" & "Time Gentlemen Please", so far still my favorites among the more recent P&C adventures (so you see, I don't care about dated graphics, I wouldn't even have thought of calling them dated :) ).

I know what Steam is and what it requires, I've got a Steam account myself. And I still prefer it if I can install and play my games on a computer that's not connected to the internet.

Brawe is funny but short... no voice, feels old school, nicely drawn, nothing special.

Rover is terrible... flashing hotspots you can't turn off and bad voice acting. Writing is only so-so, didn't play it for long.

Don't have the other one.

Thanks! I guess I'll skip it then.

As for Brawe, short can also mean good in my book, I tend to get a bit impatient with adventures if they drag on for too long (especially because a lot of them tend to prolong the story by putting random obstacles in your way). Besides, one of my favorite adventures, Full Throttle, can be played through in less than two hours, I think. ;)

So, when you say short, how short do you mean? And did you feel it ended prematurely?

For the price I thought it was solid. Just don't expect something epic. The writing is consistently amusing throughout, which keeps everything moving... might feel shorter than it is.

I think you'll dig it.

I bought it yesterday an It's english only. I also prefer the english voices and only miss german subtitles. While it's a german game my only fear is that they removed some of the funny textparts or ruined some jokes, but so far it's a really a nice game. If you buy it, for windowed mode you need to add a w to your shortcut.
