JudasIscariot: The Guild lets you be as bad as you wanna be :)
Yes, The Guild is one of the few games that let you truly be an evil bastard. I can't believe I've forgotten about it.

I anyone a "good guy" in that world?
Pretty much any open ended world. The freedom to do what you want is nice, but it's sad to see so many gamers take the Machiavellian approach so easily. Sure, it's nice to tip your toes in the darker waters once in a while, but gamers these days have become exceedingly cruel, impatient, and well... kind of evil. The ragequit syndrome you see on videos on youtube is just a symptom. Playing violent games might not make someone violent, but it sure seems gamers enjoy playing on the dark side a bit too often.

I'll refrain from putting on my paragon helmet and declaring a crusade here. Just remember what Yoda said, 'the dark side is easier, more seductive. But once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you, it will.'

Dendrite25: Payday!
It's too bad this game is ignored by most people. This game is one of a kind. It's one of the most realistic and fun "bad guy" games out there.

Third mentioning of WIZARDRY IV - Return of Werdna in this thread, because it is the ultimate iconic standard of all 'playing as the bad guy'-games.

You can't expect people to have any empathy towards digital NPCs...and without empathy, human beings are naturally evil. That is why sociopaths are dangerous... So I don't think embracing the dark side every time you are playing games will make you turn to the dark side in real life because of empathy.

yyahoo: The Manhunt series from Rockstar...

monkeydelarge: In Manhunt, you aren't a "bad guy"... You are simply trying to survive...against people trying to kill you.
So being an escaped serial killer who should have been executed just makes him a little misunderstood?

Sadly, more and more young people are seeing actual living persons around them as the fleshy version of NPCs. I read a story the other day about a teen who killed his parents because they were trying to take his cell phone away. He then posted about it on facebook and bragged about it. Yeah, that's pretty fucking twisted. What's just as bad as that teen will have to learn the hard way that you can't just hit the reset button and start over. Real world decisions have real world consequences. If a person cannot realize that, they have some deep seeded problems grasping not only morality, but REALITY.

The game just tells us, the main character was a death row prisoner who was recently executed by lethal injection. That doesn't mean he is a bad guy. Then is forced to survive, basically. There was no way he could survive in the game without killing everyone because everyone in the game is hostile towards him.

Sentenced to death and almost executed criminal sounds pretty bad.

If a death row prisoner escaped prison after his execution failed and then killed hundreds of people in an attempt to stay alive while on the run, I don't think anyone would label him anything but a "bad guy".

I'm not sure I buy your reasoning, but you're free to believe it yourself...

It could mean, one day he went into a rage and accidentally killed someone or he was framed or the authorities fucked up and sentenced him to prison and death while the real killer is free. But it's safe to assume someone who was on death row is a bad guy so I agree with those of you who brought up Manhunt now. Yes, you play as a bad guy in Manhunt.

Carmageddon indeed. Because there's hardly anything more sadistic than being a homicidal maniac driving around in a big red car smashing other cars and brutally killing a bunch of pixels.
