Miaghstir: Starcraft/Warcraft and HammerFall also fits each other like a glove on a hand (especially when playing Protoss/Orcs).

Yes but what if you only have one hand (let's say right hand) and you only have a glove specifically designed for the left hand. It's... a bit of a problem.

That's like playing Zerg or Undead to the same music, completely incompatible.

I've only done it with UT2k4. I like choral music, specially the kind that makes you feel like you're in an action movie or has a victorious tune to it. Fits well with racing games and fast FPS's like UT.

Heavy metal. For the most part, though, I only do this when playing Everquest 2, because after logging a clearly unhealthy number of hours online, the in-game music and sound effects get just a bit wearisome.
Outside of that, I usually just let the game decide what it wants to play. I'm playing Crusader: No Regret lately, and you better believe I'm not covering up THAT soundtrack.

I just load up the DOW2 soundtrack while I play WoW, or if I'm feeling really awesome, MW2. With titles such as "Show Me What Passes For Music Among Your Misbegotten Kind" you really can't go wrong.

I always liked to occasionally pop in a random album when playing a game that used redbook audio just to see what tracks would play. Classical music went particularly well with FPS's.

Lamb of God, Ozzy, and Slayer while playing Painkiller.
I prefer the music of Atlantica Online since I think it is well orchestrated.
Alice in Chains while playing GTA: San Andreas
Erm...something old time like while playing Soldiers: Heroes of WW2
Queen while playing Mount and Blade...

cw8: I listen to music, namely from the 70s-90s, most of the time in the background unless the in-game music is excellent.
When I raided in vanilla WoW back in 2006, I played Rhapsody of Fire's music, e.g. Emerald Sword. It kept you going after dying at 3% after fighting the same boss for like 20 mins every encounter, every weekday night for a week or so.
Now I listen to Dawn of Victory also by Rhapsody when playing Hearts of Iron 3 as the Allies trying to destroy the Axis powers. Particularly epic, though the HOI's music soundtrack is already epic.
Their songs are all awesome for fantasy/RPG games etc.

Hehe, hearing "Gloria, Gloria, Perpetua" from Dawn of Victory while marching into WWII Tokyo and thus ending the Pacific War or Nazi Berlin in Hearts of Iron 3 is beyond epic lol.

Aye, need some music in WoW, especially when the bosses tell you stuff like:
"Your friends will leave me"
"That my heart will stop"
"That I suck and it'll be all over soon"
"That they'll show me no mercy"
"That I should've stayed home"
"That I'm a morsel"
etc etc etc
over and over and over again for weeks, months to come.
