Hello GOG Community,

I call on your help once again...

I am looking for a freeware FPS zombie game (yes, I know.).

It doesn't have to be, but I would prefer it if it was editable somewhat.

I just want it to be something simple, but not too fancy graphics either, as my computer cannot handle something too fancy.

Thanks,

sloganvirst

Well, depends on what you mean by 'freeware'. There are a ton of zombie mods for HL1 for example, which are 'free' if you own the game.
Get a shotgun and go to an Justin Bieber concert. Awesome graphics!

Modern Talking concert gets you much more genuine zombie experience :)

Yeah, but Thomas Anders comes from my area, and he is a really nice guy. So, I'm kinda biased....

Well, I own the non-steam version of HL1, but I do not own HL2 (I know there are heaps of mods for it).

I more meant a standalone game, but, you would probably be able to edit it if it was HL1, but I do not know how.

I was working on one using an Unreal Engine 1 game, but I could not get the zombie animations correct, so I was just looking to see if there was something already done.

SimonG: snip
Ha ha!

Do I get more points for shooting JB himself?

Or maybe an sniper rifle so I can sit up in the roof...

You can download Team Fortress 2 or Alien Swarm (which are free) which should then allow you to play HL2 mods.

Zombie Panic: Source is a fun and still active mod, but like most mods it's multiplayer only. I'd recommend it though. Nothing more satisfying than making the ace with a revolver miss your zombie head with all 6 shots.

I'm pretty sure that you can use your HL CD-Key to register it on Steam. With that, you should also get the other stuff that used to be free back in the day (TFC, DMC, Ricochet, CS 1.6). I'm not sure whether you still get them though (I registered my key back when Steam was still in beta), but the original should still be registrable. In any case, there's no drawback for doing so.

Also, many if not most of those mods do not require Steam, just stand-alone HL.
Also, I haven't tried many HL2 mods, but I'm pretty sure that the HL modding community is still more active than the HL2 one.

If you don't have the CD any more then Valve Hammer Editor should also come on Steam once you register your game (check under Tools). The level editor itself is fairly easy to get into (I got a pretty decent hang of it by simply experimenting), but I have personally not done any modding.
Try Dead Frontier. It's not FPS and it's kinda grind heavy, but it IS a decent survival horror/zombie lootfest with decent action.

It's an MMO, though, so just be forewarned. I haven't played it much lately, but they upgraded to Unity and the graphics are much better than their first iterations.

They also have a few unique occurences, some player set up towns, zombie attacks throughout the day with major payouts in cash/experience if you successfully defend the town. (Unfortunately, the only way to really succeed is by pairing up with GOOD players. You go random and you end up with nutjobs trying to hold of an attack with a butter knife...and that's almost not an exaggeration.)

Well, I do still own my CD and Key, but I can't register it for some reason (maybe it is too old?).

I would rather have something a little better quality than HL1, not dissing older games, just I was hoping for something around Deus Ex/Halo/Painkiller level game.

And I want something already done, just if I wanted to, say, add a gun, that is the editable-ness I was looking for. I do not need it, just it depends on what content the game already has.
Also, before I forget, there's also Last Stand: Union City.

Once again, it's not an FPS and it's Flash based, but it's pretty deep and satisfying in regards to action. It's also not too grindy, has plenty of random attacks thrown in to keep you on your toes while you explore and loot. Also, it has massive depth. There's literally dozens of different combinations you can go for with your character. You can go strength/endurance/melee heavy with a focus on looting. You can go stealth, lockpick, speed and endurance heavy so you can get into and out of areas without taking too much damage. (Not to mention, day/night cycle changes which enable you to sneak up on zombies who haven't spotted you and oneshot kill them.) You can go gun heavy, but be forewarned, if your firearms aren't silenced, then you take a major risk using them outdoors, as every zombie in the area is gonna be coming your way.

That's all from me. Sorry :(
