My first introduction to free to play games are crappy Iphone games that bombard you with ads or constantly hit you up to buy crap you don't need. I have always felt better buying a game at full price in order to get the full experience than to get it for free and feel like I'm missing out or something. When I have tried a PC game that was Free to Play, I came across new problems. The level ups and rewards were too far in between and essentially forced you to spend real cash to get the upgrades. It felt like a pay to win scenario.
For the most part, I've avoided nearly all of the Free to play games on Steam due to the above reasons. I am here to tell you that I have found a game that made me change my mind, Nosgoth. Nosgoth is based on the Legacy of Kain series. The LoK connection is what initially caught my eye. The free Beta invite convinced me to at least give the game a try.

First, let me say that the most fun I've ever had with an online battle arena was with WoW. I used to set a time every Sunday morning to meet with friends and do a few rounds of a BG or Arena before breakfast. I have been looking for a similar experience ever since I quit WoW for good.
Nosgoth is the closest I've come to replicating that WoW arena experience. Right now all it has is a 4v4 (rumored to be 5v5 soon) arena battleground of Humans vs Vampires. A single game consists of two rounds where each team gets to play both sides once. The winner is determined by the total number of kills at the end of the two matches. The trick is that if you want to win, you need to use Teamwork.
The Vampires are more powerful than the humans and can easily take one down one on one. So, the Humans need to stick together near the supply stations (healing points) and watch each other's backs. This leads to a very tense Human side where you are laying down traps and constantly looking at the rooftops for stalking Vampires never knowing where the next attack is going to come from. And if you find yourself separated from the group, that mad rush back to the team can be terrifying.
The Vampire side is equally as fun. You can climb up buildings and stalk the humans from the rooftops waiting for one to split off from the pack. If you ever catch a Human by himself, he might as well be dead already. You still need to work as a group since you can still be killed pretty easily if you're outnumbered. It is extremely satisfying to have all your team ready to strike from different sides and take out the entire human side in one go.
This post has gone on long enough. I never thought I'd be hooked on a Free to Play game but here I am. This game isn't a pay to win game. The level ups and rewards are easy to attain. They did it right with this game.
Check it out.
