Celebrate our fifth birthday and shoot for the stars--for free!

Our fifth birthday celebrations continue with the addition of a new free game to the catalog: Stargunner, a frenetic Sci-Fi side-scrolling classic shooter, is now on GOG.com!

In a distant galaxy of Andromeda an epic struggle between two planets is drawing to a close. The greedy, powerful Zilions are gathering an almighty fleet to destroy, once and for all, a neighboring civilization of Ytimians. When their army takes flight, there is nothing that can stop them from annihilating Ytima. Unless you--one of the elite squad of Stargunners--can cripple their immense forces while they are still stationed at strongholds scattered on the surface of Zile. The challenge, even for a special forces pilot like you, is daunting. So get your laser cannons charged and lead your swift spacecraft to victory!

Stargunner is an exceptionally well-crafted Sci-Fi shooter with fast-paced action and explosive boss fights. You will have to battle over 75 unique, fully-rendered and animated enemy ships in diverse environments: in space, on the planet's Zile mountainous surface, even underwater, with plenty of weapons, shields, and power-ups available to boost your craft. With fitting soundtrack and--for the time of its original release--ground-breaking pre-rendered 3D graphics, which made the game one of the most beautiful and detailed shooters of the 90s, Stargunner is a sure-fire pick for classic shoot 'em up fans!

Blast through the almighty Zilion fleet in this frantic space extravaganza, get your free copy of Stargunner on GOG.com!
Thanks for the free game, GOG, but where's Wacky Wheels? Where?!? I know you can do it! =P
Thanks GOG, and happy birthday! Here's to many more. :)
I like free games, and shmups even more. Thanks GOG!
I'm loving this game!
Thank you so much!
Thanks GOG and Happy Birthday
Really just enjoying this for the OST right now - so good
Happy birthday GOG! Today is also my son's 1 month birthday, so we can celebrate together!

Thanks so much for providing this much needed service and for flying the DRM-Free flag high for us older gamers that still remember what it is to own the games you bought.

Thanks also for Stargunner! It looks like a side-scrolling Tyrian, which was the game that brought me here in the first place a couple years ago, and one of my favorites from the 90s. Stay classy!

JinseiNGC224: What's some other good classic freeware that could come to GOG in the future? (as in, legal freeware)

I would guess more than could be listed, but a couple titles to dwell on and hope for would be nice :)
This is some of what I found on Abandonia and around (it's possible some of it isn't actually freeware and I pasted some of the items in the wrong text doc):

Elite (should really come, imo!)

Caesar

Jetpack, God of Thunder (http://www.adeptsoftware.com/jetpack/)

Mine Bombers by Skitso Productions

DX-Ball, Blitwise, http://www.blitwise.com/aboutus.html

B-17 Flying Fortress, from Microprose

One Must Fall 2097, from Epic Games

Kens Labyrinth, from Advanced Systems

Inner Worlds

Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw (7 Days Skeptic, etc.)

Rebecca Clements (Cirque de Zale)

Maupiti Island, Lankhor

Well,we don't have to worry about Kings Quest 1 or 2, nor B-17 Flying Fortress. All of which are here already.

As for Caesar, I'd love to see that, but I'd be happy to see Caesar 1 and 2 bundled together for $5.99

Aside from the final fantasy title nothing else rings a bell >.> Goes to show how much I know about classic games :D

HiPhish: It's the "photocopy of a photocopy" effect. While old games were striving to be impressive with their ambition these modern "retro" platformers are just nostalgia drugs for people who grew up on old (and much better) games.
I do ascent to that as well.
You kids have no idea how much my face lit up when I saw this article on the front page.
I just noticed this is the earlier version 1.0b instead of version 1.1a; is this deliberate? GOG.com releases normally have the latest patch.
Awesome. I've seen it on the 3D Realms page I think, never got around to play it. Thanks, GOG!

triock: Ok, here it is - PCUT-6X97-RQE6-F2AK :D
Dang, has already been used. Oh well, maybe during a promo. Might pick it up along with Teenagent and Beneath a Steel Sky.

Wow, people even complain about a FREE game.

I never heard of this game before so I never knew it was available for free, so thank you GOG for introducing it to me.
