Bungie have remastered their marathon series a bit and released them as freeware for PC, Mac & Linux. These have upgraded resolution & Marathon 2 is a port of the XBLA version.

Really good stuff there.
I've just been playing this!

It was reported on RPS yesterday I believe. It's a very good engine, and there's lots of 3rd Party levels / scenarios to play through as well...

much goodness to be had for 0 pennies!
Weren't the data files and Aleph One available free for ages already?
I can't seem to spot where it says minimum specs are - am I being blind?
Great news, I was always interested to try out the Marathon series, even if they are mostly from the Doom era (IIRC). Nice to have them available officially anyway.

Thanks - LOL I HAVE an FX5200 so I'm right on spec!
what's 'Bloom' though?
But the download from sourceforge seems to run pretty slow. Maybe the reception is really tremendous at the moment.

I think so yes - this has just been released as version 1.0 though - before it was always a 'work in progress'
Is there a way to switch off the abysmal fade-in in the main menu? Or a way to change controls/graphics settings without quitting the game?

Bloom is normally an effect that creates um...... this blurry yet sparkly, dreamy effect?
I like my images sharp so I usually turn them off.
Be aware this is a port from the XBLA version, which was reported to cause motion sickness in more than a few people (Something common with old games anyway).
I'll give this a go when I get home. I've played the originals years ago and wasn't too impressed despite the resident Mac fanboy in my class at uni going on about how it beat Doom in every sense. What I saw was a game with too many bright colours, confusing maps, a much more boring atmosphere and setting and crappier weapons. It's not a bad game, but Doom it is not. It reminded me a lot more of Cybermage.

I thought I heard it be compared to System Shock 1...
