The links to The Elder Scroll games that were listed in this thread don't work anymore. They're still available for free from Bethesda's official ES website though:

Zelda Classic

Just like the Legend of Zelda console game. Only better because there are fan made quests, tile sets, etc. Many of these fan created quests are bigger than full sized NES games. They have large overworld maps which include numerous locations containing multiple levels.

There is also a perfectly replicated clone of the original Zelda game. And there are non-Zelda mods as well. There is also a quest creator so you can create your own game. There is a large data base of graphic and sound material to use.

A new version, currently in public Beta is in the works.

TripleA

A turn based strategy game engine. There are perhaps a hundred fan created games to download. Many are World War II based. Including some fan created clones of various versions of the popular Axis and Allies boardgame. Other games range from ancient times to futuristic.

There are both single and multi-player modes. There are at least two active servers running at all times. There is PBEM support as well. The game is quite playable now, and has been for some time. But it is under constant development and refinement. A new unstable version (v1.3.1) has recently been released (May 13th, 2011) which added a new AI, drastically improved the existing AI, and has added a number of features that modders have requested.

Heres some info I posted on my Wikipedia user page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AWhiteElk/TripleA_%28computer_game%29

And heres a pictorial sampling of just a few of the games available:

I didn't see this game listed in the list on the front so I'll post it here:

The Silver Lining - It's the spiritual successor, of sorts, to the King's Quest series. I haven't had time to play it yet but it's free and 3 "episodes" have already been made. You only have to register on their site to be able to download them.

And from Shrapnel Games, they released Steel Panthers: Main Battle Tank and Steel Panthers: World War Two for free.
Since noone else seems to have mentioned it yet:

Dungeon Master - Return to Chaos (RTC), a faithful freeware clone of FTL's first person RPGs Dungeon Master (1987), the expansion Chaos Strikes Back (1989) and Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep (1993), including a RTC custom version and a level editor. Runs under Windows.

Sweet...looks awesome. :)
I just noticed Dink Smallwood wasn't on the list, that's terrible!
Or maybe the list just isn't updated anymore.
Remember when I posted about those free versions of Clonk?
Because I sure do!
There's also an open source version being developed, rather cleverly called OpenClonk.

People really should check them out, if only for the engine(s).
They are very cool pixel-based engines, things like loose sand and water are, well for the time pretty amazing IMO.
I've never seen anything quite like it since (but I have only played a lot of games, not every game ever made).
It was also very funny to pump water or oil into the other players mine in multiplayer.

Thanks, man. I downloaded Clonk Endeavor the other day - does Open Clonk advance past that release?

I think it should since it's based on the Clonk Rage sourcecode which I believe came after Endeavour. Not quite sure how that happened since Rage is shareware.. I guess at one time they released the old source and kept developing it?

"The aim of the independent OpenClonk project is to gradually reinvent Clonk to create a worthy alternative to the original Clonk shareware series by RedWolf Design. OpenClonk is based on the Clonk Rage source code and has been significantly enhanced since. Aside from completely new game content, the features of this first release include a complete revision of the controls and HUD, a zoom function, and the integration of 3D models into gameplay."

Awesome! I downloaded Endeavor wishing I could afford Rage - but if this is an advanced Rage for free - problem solved!

Thanks again.
Ultimate Quake Engine v1.14 has been released, you can use it to play HeXen 2 and its expansion. There's also a XNA BSP Renderer for Quake 2. Download using IE.

Lhademmor: K, I'm looking into it. For starters, I'll handle it in a .txt-file. Then we'll see if I exceed any post limits

Leroux: Any updates on this? I think there's very good reason for re-starting this thread, so that someone still active on these forums can maintain it and readers don't need to scan all 14+ plus pages for links. Clear categorization would be a big plus, too. And if the new thread thanks doomer for his initiative and explains why someone else has taken over, I think there should be no objections.
I finally got through 15+ pages of links. Christ, what a journey. And to make matters worse, I ran into the character limit as predicted by someone. The result was rather clumsy.

Anyway, NEW AND UPDATED FREE GAMES THREAD - STEP RIGHT THIS WAY FOLKS
I am just bumping this so that some new members know of it's existence. and maybe contribute too!
