AFAIK the freeware release was 1.80 (at least the forums offer 1.80 version) and it was still buggy as hell to point of being completely unplayable for some people. You can read recent player review (who played it thru)here.

Actually they've been out for free for some time already, but I didn't suspected about it because they're still selling the 2nd game on steam for like $10... but you can get it for free. ;)
The third game in the series is this (but it's not free):

Yeah probably, just like BattleForge on steam (I've talked about it in this very same thread).
But I don't care for premium or in-game credits or what, I always go for free if there's free. :)
