Unreal Tournament is the way to go imo. I like both GOTY and 2004. 2004 is probably better to start with..
You haven't lived until you have played Brutal Doom.
Rise of the Triad has LAN right?
If so that

Awesome, if I run into any money I'll buy a copy of 2004 off GOG. Till then I'm a little strapped for cash. It looks rather good.

I've heard about that, though if it's for Doom 1 or 2, I have only copies on floppy disk and no disk drive to read them from. :( Or is it a stand alone? I always thought it was a mod.

Yes! Someone buy him UT 2004 ! NOW OR I KILL THE PUPPY !!!
F.E.A.R. had a free multiplay component, I don't know if it is LAN capable however.

Fear is fully LAN capable.

We did play it at our local lan parties.

Are you sure that this is also true for F.E.A.R. Combat? That's the free multiplayer-only version Strijkbout is talking about. I think it's LAN-compatible but personally I never tried it and my buddies only played it online.

Oh my, such strong convictions for UT2004, it must be fantastic... :) Makes me wish I had the money that much more LOL. I do have F.E.A.R. free MP somewhere around here but I don't remember if we could get LAN going on it for some reason. :(

I'll have to see if I can dig my copy of this out later, I hope I can get it working in Wine.

edit: holy crap! I found my copies of Alien vs Predator 1, AvP 2, Quake 2, Quake 3: Arena and Hexen!

Hmm, I found a copy of Doom 2 but it's only the shareware edition and it's MP is non existent for some reason. :(
Part of me is tempted to dip into my savings to get UT2004, but I know I should just wait two or three weeks till I have cash. :P

I've give you my copy,, but it's about 9k miles away right now, and it would be a bit of a pain.
