I wanted to get some opinions on this. For as long as I've played modern fps' (about four years), I've used the wasd configuration. However, I always swap the reload key to f, use key to r, jump key to shift, and duck/shoot-dodge key to space. The only inference I can think of where this isn't the case is Oni, which has no options to manually configure key assignments. Having said this, am I just a weird "southpaw" guy, or do some of you also have different preferences? Oh, and I always invert the Y-axis.
I just use the WASD, but I don't do inversions. I just like the defaults, it is what I'm used to.
I used to map right click to jump and middle click to secondary
now I just use what the standard for the game is, even in Doom.
About the only control customization I do to the standard FPS controls is mapping the reload button and grenade button (if one exists) to one of the extra buttons on my 8-button mouse.

Same. When gaming on a computer, I live and die by the typical WASD configuration.
I just can't get used to jumping with the space bar. It feels...Weird.
I use WASD with the spacebar or E as jump, mouse wheel (if the game supports it) to change weapons. Ever since I could use WASD I did. WASD is the reason I cannot play console shooters without going into rage mode. I feel like I cut one of my hands off every time I play a console shooter.
WASD Fo' Life, Baby!
WASD is a tool of the devil to corrupt your soul and make you buy stock in EA!
I'm an arrow keys man myself, that with a 6 button mouse, control, shift, enter, \, backspace, home, end, page up, page down, insert, delete and the 2 leftmost rows on the numeric keypad give me every control I ever need for FPS', all within reach of a single finger and with nice separation of the movement keys

Arrow keys do not work well on my lappy since I use my left hand for the movement and use functions in a game and the arrow keys are on the far right of the laptop. Plus my laptop has no num pad so there goes that idea. WASD = it works for me!

It doesn't work perfectly on my lappy either but then if I want to play a shooter on it, it's a simple matter to plug a keyboard in since I have to plug in a mouse anyway. I use the arrows left handed as well, I just shift the keyboard till it's comfortable

Sounds like too much work for me, bro. I just beat the Controls config in game until it is set just right. I don't have the real estate to ply with another keyboard since I no longer use a desk...I just play in bed and I am good.
WASD to move, QE to peep corners, R to reload (bound to side mouse button #2 for Info/inventory), T (bound to the side mouse button #1) to jump, L-SHIFT to crouch, L-CTRL to walk, F for action, C for secondary action, V for tertiary action, SPACE for 4th action or use command. MOUSE to look around, M1 to attack, M2 to do the alt-attack/zoom, M3 for Map/Zoom/Special/Command, Mouse-Scroll to scroll weapon list.
But for some reasons, I switch to an IOJKL;M layout for stealth sections, and use Z & X for attack & Action.

Do you play FPS games with the touchpad??
ESDF for movement, R to reload, Q/T to look, Y/U for chat/teamchat, W for use, A for crouch, Z/X for dropping, C/V/B for quick menus or radio chat, G for firing mode or melee, Shift to run, Control to walk, Space to jump.
I think the early beta versions of Counterstrike featured ESDF. I was already quite used to WASD, but once you get a feel for all of the extra keys it's hard to go back.

I actually do that as well... nothing beats a good game of Prey while you're on the train.
Anyway, about the layout: WASD for movement, left button for shooting, right button for jumping, E for activating, R for reload, mouse wheel for weapon selection, MW push for secondary.
That's all the controls I want or need. Everything else is just scattered around the keyboard wherever the default config put it. Who needs "lean left/right"? Just take a look and run back to cover.
