Kristian: So let me get this straight, giveaways are a bad thing now?
avatar
stoicsentry: Apparently. Only forum I'm aware of where people are just giving stuff away and others are whining about it. WTF.
To be fair, they aren't complaining about the giveaways themselves, just that the interface GOG has provided for the forum causes them to swamp out other topics.

Of the 50 topics on page 1 (as I post this) 23 have the word "giveaway" in their title, so... 46% of the first page topics are (obvious) giveaways.

Lifthrasil: Great. Problem solved. Thank you!

Ian: you know you really are narrow minded. Look at the bigger picture - ne_zavarj has spent his time recently cultivating relationships between developers and GOG. This may have resulted in YOU being able to buy a game, from a developer currently not on GOG, if indeed they do come here in the future.

Because he did it in the form of giveaways, and you are too lazy to install a script that ignores them - you are not telling me or ne_zavarj to fuck off, you are telling GOG. Not only are you saying that we "the community" should not help GOG explore other games/developers, you are also asking GOG to ignore any profit provided by the likes of me, who buy GOG games to give to the community.
Sorry, Ian. It seems you didn't read my follow up post and you are directing your indignation at the wrong person. I didn't tell ne_zavarj or anyone to fuck off. I really meant it as a thank you, because I read her sentence "I'm sorry . I will not create more threads on this forum." as an admission that she had overdone it a bit with the number of threads and that she would stop creating more, and instead bundle her giveaways in the existing ones. And I really thought that the problem with people complaining about too many giveaways was solved with that. And for that I thanked her.

Because as much as I like giveaways, I can also understand that people who don't like giveaways are annoyed when one person opens many threads in a short time. Therefore I suggested as a compromise to stop making many threads in a short time and instead bundling the giveaways in one thread. I thought that would help, because I don't want giveaways to be banned to a separate forum. I wouldn't have thought that ne_zavarj would take an attempt at compromise as such an insult to cancel all her giveaways. I still think that that is quite an over-reaction, especially since she is punishing those with that action that didn't disagree with her making giveaways.

I am sorry if I contributed involuntarily to that over-reaction. But I am still convinced that making just one thread if you have many games to give away in a short time instead of making a dozen threads, would really help to increase the acceptance of giveaways with those not interested in them. (less simultaneous threads = less negative reaction)

Im with you on this. Really disappointed for ne_zavarj, they obviously have got a good relationship with devs to be able to arrange those giveaways and due to this thread, all that has been canned. Way to go OP :(

Kristian: Why should you decide what I and others get to name our threads? If I want to give a thread a funny and/or creative name I will and I won't ask you beforehand. You are the one doing the demading here not he.
avatar
Starmaker: ...because it's common courtesy that the thread title should reflect its content? If I made a thread titled "new game by Molleindustria", the first post should not contain a request for Lotus Domino tips instead.
It is very much possible to come up with an accurate name for such a thread without using the exact word "giveaway". If I create a thread called "Win Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition" it is pretty darn clear what the thread is for. If I want to to create a multi-purpose thread say asking some technical question and I decide to hide a giveaway in the text of the OP, then it would defeat the purpose if I put "giveaway" in the thread title.

Not really OP's fault, nor his decision. This is the internet, it's pretty accustomed that the person you are talking to is not as fickle as a leaf in fall.

No one ever is going to be fully appreciated, that doesn't mean you gotta blow the lid because of one guy.

How about "Frank". "Frank" is a very nice name.

Yeah, actually whenever this thread makes me want to strangle everyone, I take a breathe, and remember this :

We're on a forum where the amount of gratuitous generosity gets so huge that people see it as becoming a unmanagable technical problem, and as "drowning" all the rest.

If for one instant (but just one instant) you put aside the irritating nagging about having to click or not click on some selected thread titles or "next page" buttons, and only look at the cause of it, it really tells you something about human nature. The human nature that some want to define as spontaneously selfish and self-serving, and see as the root of all human problems.

So, you know. Off-topically. Each time somebody starts his super aware cynical discourses about "human nature", or, worse, try to base social/economical policies on it, remind him of places where people spontaneously giving stuff away become a "flooding issue".

That was actually a Python reference. :D

and I just got derepped for it! XD
Okay that's the last straw! You can hit me for talking about Amazing Stories, Hockey, and dead movie critics but as soon as you start hitting me for quoting Python IT'S WAR!!!!! Hell hath no fury like a Python fan scorned! I hold no quarter! I will wave my private parts at your aunties! I will fart in your general direction! I'll sic my rabbit on you; he has sharp pointy teeth! He's the most foul tempered rodent you ever laid eyes on! I will have my vengeance! Have at you!

I have an apology to make - Lifthrasil, I am very sorry, I misread your post and took itin the wrong way. Also, having re-read what I wrote, I am ashamed, it sounds personal towards you, and that was never my intention. Proves I should not type when I am tired.

Tbh, it is not indignation I feel, it is frustration. It seems to me there are similar threads to this every week, so it must be the same frustration felt by peeps who do not enjoy seeing giveaways. Apart from the script that can block them, Judas (i believe) suggested that questions such as in this thread, would be better looked at via official channels.

Again, I am truly sorry Lifthrasil - in no way were my cooments meant to offend.

No problem. I understand that my posting was too short to convey what I meant and was taken as too cynical in the heated atmosphere. And I understand the frustration this topic causes. So no offence taken - and please DO continue to make your weekly giveaway (as long as you can afford it). It really is awesome (even if I never win ;-) )

If you want to force me to look at your giveaway threads, I won't look at any of your threads. Filtering by username works fine. And nothing of value was lost.
