I stumbled upon this and while I was watching their tech video I felt, that this is a possibly a scam. Reason being, that the way the game is played on their tech demo looks like how you'd play it on ScummVM on Android without absolute mouse positioning turned on.

As you might know, Flight of the Amazon Queen can be downloaded for free as an extra from ScummVM's site and the game runs pretty much perfectly on at least my Android tablet (Galaxy tab2 7). So that also makes a specific Android version a bit redundant idea.

Here's the link:

Like you said, the 'problem' they are solving is a non-issue, since anyone can just play it through ScummVM.
I would say that anyone claiming to have that much Android development knowledge and is working on porting an old game would CERTAINLY know as much. It's a scam.
Probably a scam.
Thankfully it looks like everybody else also realizes it's probably a scam. As of right now they have only raised $95.00.
Also, "freeware" is not the same as "public domain". Just because the game is freely available to anyone, that doesn't mean that the game isn't copyrighted, and that anyone can exploit the IP commercially if they so wish.

I feel sorry for those who gave their money, poor bastards.

This project will only be funded if at least $40,000 is pledged by Saturday Jan 5, 11:59pm EST.
They'll be fine.
Wow, for only $5000 you get a phone call from the lead developer! If I want to talk to some scamming asshole I usually just have to wait a week for a call from a call center - and it's free! :P

Funny story, btw. Once such a scammer called me and told me that I won a competition of sorts (which I had never agreed to or even heard about) but I had not yet paid the entry fee of several hundred euros - and supposedly I was legally obliged to pay up for agreeing to participate . Thankfully using the words "my lawyer" made him hang up. :P

Oh God. Telling boring unrelated stories. I'm getting old.

It's probably the developer and his friends or alt's "seeding" the funds to make it seem more legit.
$40,000 for obviously just a port...! (O_O)

Maybe even just a game bundled with an emulator. :P
Nice to see it wasn't only me, whose spider sense started tingling. I wonder if the ScummVM guys know about this? And not to mention the original creators of Amazon Queen.
Anyone with a Kickstarter account that can report them?

The right option is really none of the above.. This just smells of scam. A game that just happens to be freeware, but not public domain.. So do they have permission from the original creators? If not, it's illegal. A game that already runs great in ScummVM an already works on Android.. It's fishy. And I'm not the only one who thinks all the backers will get is the freeware game+emulator for Android. Which already exists.

All I'm saying is, you have hereby been warned.

Exactly this! I've sent them a message on Kickstarter asking how they came to own the rights and what association they have with John Passfield and Steve Stamatiadis (the creators and owners of the game and the ones who released it freeware but still own it because freeware doesn't equal public domain).

Got to love the fake story board screenshots:

The things on the right are just stills from the original version of the game and the pictures on the left seem intended to imply that the screenshots were developed from these sketches even though it's clearly the other way around.
