Though actually one of my favorite characters has to be Jane. I despised him initially, but after "Janestown" he turned out to be totally awesome (and an idiot).

The shows entire concept was "Cowboy Bebop, in live action"

That makes me want to see it, though I'll surely be disappointed, again. Most tv shows today disappoint me, even if I haven't actually had any hopes or even knowing what the concept was.

It's not *really* Cowboy Bebop. It lacks the elegance/nonchalance of Cowboy Bebop's storytelling. Still, the comparison is somewhat valid. The main concept for firefly was 'space western'.

I especially liked the complete absence of the "prime directive" . . . like when the guy is kicked into the engine or when he shots the horse to get a better shot at the bad guy . . . =)

Kaylee and Jane were my favorites.
Loved the TV series the best, but the movie was pretty good, too, all things considered.
A great cast and good work while it lasted. Networks and Studios are so stupid.
Say what you will, Joss Whedon has an eye for talent.
(I was a big Buffy and Angel fan, too. There are some simply classic episodes in each.)

Eh, I like Whedon, but if anything, it's Point 5 that really bugs me about him. I'm more than aware the man is fallible, and I'm not willing to defend him to the death as a result. He really needs to stop killing cool characters. That being said, I'd argue he has the ability to create some really cool characters, which is more than a lot of people can do to begin with. Which is why I defend him at all. For all his faults, the man can write some fun dialogue, and craft some very amusing characters.

Count me in as a browncoat too ! I really loved this show, and, to a lesser extent, the movie. Watched them both again like 2 months ago.
Firefly did not have the epic scale of Babylon 5, nor the photography and musical score of Battlestar Galactica. Yet, there was really something about it. The cast is great, some dialogs are hilarious, and the whole western-in-space thing works surprisingly well.
Maybe it is almost a good thing that this show ended prematurely. I mean, I am not sure the magic would have lasted for many seasons. Something like 2 seasons with a good, clear ending would have been perfect. Well, 13 episodes and the movie will just have to do.
I totally agree with several comments above. Kaylee is really cute, and Jane is an awesome character, especially in the episodes following Janestown. And my favorite episode is Out of Gas, this episode is just amazing.

I love the down-to-earth-ness of Firefly. No aliens, no magic technology. Just a beat up old spaceship and a couple of strong characters.
I like some episodes better than others, but my personal favorite episode is the truly hilarious "Our Mrs. Reynolds".

I like Firefly a lot. It certainly helped that the Southern accents of the cast were above average for actors.
Whedon does take the opportunity to get in a few licks at religion, even despite the presence of the Shepherd. The Buddhist core worlds are corrupt and dehumanized. The frontiers are full of wacko Christians. I often don't know whether to be relieved or irritated that every time someone seems to be quoting from the Bible, the quote is completely fabricated.
But on the whole, I thought the show was great. One thing that made me sorry the show was cut short was the resolution of the reaver plotline in the movie. Given all the beliefs people had about reavers at the beginning of the show, it would have been interesting to see that develop more slowly.
And yes, Out of Gas is an amazing episode. Heart of Gold is terrible. It's pretty clear why the network didn't run that one. It contains all of Wheddon's worst tendencies in one episode.
