I finished watching this last night, many of my friends urged me to watch it.. stating..
"It's so good"
"It's freakin' awesome!"
etc, etc..
The show was alright, not that great really.. I mean.. it's like every scifi show..
I mean, sure it's a scifi western... that's not at all like cowboy bebop or outlaw star or a million other generic shows..
Why is this show considered "sooo goood?"
I mean, I understood everything that was going on, I knew the characters, and they were all, alright. I mean, I really liked the bounty hunter at the end, but for the most part, it just seems like generic scifi.

Not everything's for everyone.
Personally I was bored by Citizen Kane.
It was the potential of the show that people miss most of all. The starting episodes had no real direction to them and by the time Joss Whedon started getting it focussed it was too late and it was cancelled. The movie Serenity just highlights how good it could have been.
Funny thing is if it had been based on DVD's sales rather than just ratings Firefly would have survived. Joss Whedon's last show Dollhouse was kept going by DVD sales but the show was just bloody awful and was finally killed before a third season was made.

Actually I thought it got quite good by the end. Not as good as Sarah Conor Chronicles second season, but still good.
It was definitely better than most Sci-Fi shows out there. The problem was it was on Fox.

Most of the acclaim comes from the fact that it is a Joss Whedon project. Those tend to attract a certain cult/fandom following.

Maybe watching Red Dwarf and Dr. Who has spoiled me..
Its personal opinion. I wouldn't say either Red Dwarf or Doctor Who are better or worse than Firefly. Certainly not the vast majority of the older Doctor Who episodes.

I don't know about you, but I'm kinda bugged that no new show seems to get to run anything like as long as either of those... even the ones which have a potentially interesting premise that could run and run.
I hate Joss Whedon for blaming Alien Resurrction on everyone else but him. Fuck him. He's the one that made the movie so awful. It certainly wasn't the actors. You had Ron Perlman in there. Maybe you shouldn't hire Frank Oz to make your terrifying monster, and maybe you shouldn't be making movies in the first place if you're going to play the blame game.
I really liked Firefly, i thought there was a lot of humor in the show and each of the episodes were nicely paced (Im looking at you V). If you haven't already you should check Serenity out as it does a good job of finishing up the story.
Firefly is incredible...WAS
Yea, Firefly was good. I don't think it was awesome, but definitely good. I hadn't actually heard of whedon before watching Firefly.
I also agree with the bloke who mentioned alot of what we miss is the potential of what could have been, what we saw was an introduction to the IP, the next season or two I think would of been better as character arcs fulfilled themselves and became larger.

Well Red Dwarf and Doctor Who had the benefit of being BBC productions whereas American networks tend to can things halfway through the season. There hasn't really been a good track record in terms of Sci Fi shows on the major networks. Had Firefly been on the SciFi network or another cable outlet a few years after it was originally produced on Fox I think it would have stood a much better chance as the ratings expectations would be much much lower.

Family Guy was canceled then brought back because of DVD sales. What's so different about Firefly?
