Yihaaa, i finally have Heretic II. I got tired waiting for it to appear here and by chance i came across it in a gamestore that also has a nice selection of new and used retro games!

I hope it is a good as people say it is. I know it's not the same as heretic 1 but i don't really care as long as it is a fun game? What do you guys think about it?

Edit: I would be hilarious if gog would release it this week...

Hmm i would have thought heretic 2 to be more popular?
I never even knew there was a Heretic II. I thought they went straight on to Hexen.
Never played Heretic 2, though I have played Heretic and Hexen + expansion and these games was good.

It's also made by raven software (great company, wish all of their games would come to gog) but instead of a medievil doom clone they made it a 3rd person action adventure!
I was really disappointed in Heretic 2. I found it to be generic and dull. I understand that some people really like it though, just don't expect a game like Hexen 2.
I started replying, and I realised I was thinking about Hexen II :)

Should also probably get around trying Heretic II one of these days... going to wait until I can get it digitally, though.

It is the least known game of the series, probably because it third person and not first person. Lesser known fact - an Amiga port was released of it in 2000.
I think there must be some rights issue with Heretic 2 because Steam has all the other heretic/Hexen games in a pack but this one's missing, sadly!
I really enjoyed Heretic 2, still have my original copy of it, can be a bit of a chew to get running though, finding the patches and then using a 3DFX Glide Wrapper / Emulator running in the background to stop it jumping out to desktop (I prefer to use zeckensacks Wrapper rather than nGlide, mind you haven't tried nGlide in a while so will look into that next play through). Only issue with my copy though is that the big cardboard box is now gone so just have the jewel case which thankfully has a cover.

It has aged quite well for a Quake 2 Engine game, love the flow of combat on it, the animation is superb, its a very playable game start to finish. I wouldn't say that its particularly hard either, you get decent power ups and attacks the further you get into it and there's some nice environmental type puzzles thrown in for good measure, for example the area where you have to use your weapon to vault to different squares on the floor.

If I wasn't moving next week (Monday, dreading it, hate moving) would fire it up, unfortunately most my PC game physical copies are packed up alongside all my C64 tapes and disks, megadrive and games, Spectrum and Amiga stuff so I can only play my digital stuff presently and even that is time limited with packing up a house.
I will probably install it today and see if i can make it work. Haven't got too much time though so if it requires a lot of work i will not be able to play it today

Heretic 2 came after Hexen 2. I think that was around the time Activision gobbled up Raven.

Patches :

1.07

Have to be installed in correct order

Zackensacks Glide Wrapper :

nGlide :

I believe GOG are using nGlide on the games that support 3DFX now so may be worth trying it out first, Glide looks much better than D3D on Heretic 2

Fortunately for me I have the Loki Linux port version. Haven't tried to get it work lately, but it is probably easier than this.

Or you could use Hammer of Tyrion: http://uhexen2.sourceforge.net/ Oh and Hexen 2 is a modifier Quake 1 engine, not Quake 2.

Its pretty easy to get running, just a bit of a chew in all fairness, same goes for other old disc games from that era.

Patch it up, then before starting use either nGlide of the other wrapper and configure resolution and effects etc then start the game, do your settings and away you go. Its just tinkering to get stuff the way you want it.
