Didn't FF8 suck ass on the PC compared to the consoles? My roommate had it and said it was buggy as all fuck back in the day. He ended up finishing it on the PS and said it felt like a whole different game. Maybe they'll clean it up a lot for the Steam release. Just as an example, at Gamespot the game is rated a 6.7 for the PC version and a 9.5 for the PS version.

I have both FF7 and FF8 emulated (as well as the original PC discs for 7) so unless they release these in some well updated fashion I'll be skipping over them. Square Enix has a habit of overcharging for stuff like this (they want 20 bucks for some of their mobile game 'remakes'.....). We'll see though. I do applaud the effort of releasing old, beloved titles on new platforms, so if they're reasonably priced then I might pick them up just for the sake of support.

Big_Boss: I did not abandoned it.
This game required TWO YEARS when it was released for me to complete it.
I was stuck for two damned years into Lunatic Pandora, fighting the witch with red hair (I can't remember her name, sorry).
She was powerful,I had no spells and also I can't level up because that area gave you 1 exp for fight.
It was a nightmare, I remember that every single day, when I came back from school, I tried to pass that boss, with no luck. Then a Sunday morning, I manage to beat her,I can't say how XD

Antimateria: Two years? That's dedication. =)
It was harder a lot than FFVII but it wasn't that hard.
Only witch I remember that game was that Edea.

And about grinding.. I thought that there were a lot more grinding in older FF's, like FFIV which I never finished because I lost my nerves in last place.

There really isn't much going on in Final Fantasys if you don't like those combat mechanisms. Plot? yeah right.. =P
No she wasn't Edea. In my version she was called Adele (I don't know on NTSC or UK version)

Who the hell is that? =D
Don't remember meeting that kind of fellow ever in any game.
im pretty hopeful for this, I bought the FF7 version that was re-released but later didnt play it due to the drm (shoulda checked first i know)

If and when they come to steam id likely at least get FF8 if not them both. I hope FF9 is also re-released, a lot of people didnt respond well to it but i tought it was pretty good.
I would love to play FF8 again, but my cd copy somehow don't work, so it's great... but still I would love to get gog version :P
Heh, so much for "exclusive to the Square Enix store".

If you finished the game then you must have saw her, because it's the regular boss for the end of disk three,if I remember correctly.

I remember Rhinoa being strapped on (kinda) in some being but I don't remember that looking like so.. Masculine. =)
Well if PC is your only platform I guess you could buy it.

But I doubt anyone who likes it and has a PS3 wouldn't have already bought, plus you can make it mobile by putting that version on a PSP if you have it.

Not that I would play it again mind you. 7 I thought was OK but not remarkable, and I flat out didn't like 8 and stopped playing on the second disc.

P1na: I don't recall having to grind all that much on that game. I did grind on the late game, to get some badass characters, but not early in the game. Sure, you'll be more powerful if you do grind, but I didn't feel the need.

I have to say, us gamers can sometimes be pretty stupid. You can grind to be more powerful, but it's really boring. We do it anyway, and then abandon the game because it's horribly boring. I've sometimes felt prey to this, but it's just absurd.

I have to admit I often restarted a Final Fantasy. On FF VII, I got stuck fighting this crappy robot near a submarine, who kept kidnapping my guys. On VIII it would be something else, I can't remember. At that point I would often restart and, once I knew what I was doing, I would reach that same boss and kick its ass so hard it wasn't even funny. But it was a matter of how I leveled up, not of needing to grind, from what I can remember.

Seems that my memory isn't what it used to be.
Maybe I should indeed play it again. Because of nostalgia and those musics. =)

FF7 & FF8 PC were decent "no thrills" ports but broke in the transition from Win95/ 98/ Me to 2000/ XP. There are community patches that fix them but the abandonware releases frequently aren't setup properly or include old broken ones. FF7/8 PC may be stuck with poor general midi music if you don't have the right sound card or mod. FF7 PC's prerendered video looks slightly worse than the PSX release, FF8 PC's looks much better.

FF7/ 8 PC improved resolution advantage has been largely nullified by emulators. What they retain is much better mod support (mostly FF7).
I remember FF VII being a very bad PC port. I even had to close the game with alt+f4 because there weren't any 'quit option'. Though, I had the 'free-drm' version, you know :p ... maybe was related to it?

Anyway, if anyone releases some improved version it may be worth buying, if not, I prefer staying with the psx emulation
I would want them rather on GOG, but since there is no trail of them coming here....

In case you missed it - FF7 has a HD remake on PC.
