Hey ya'll. I'm a somewhat new member of GOG, and so far i've been loving it!

I was just wondering if the guys at GOG have ever considered trying to get the old PC version of Final Fantasy VII on here. The Playstation version is already available on PSN, yet SquareEnix seem to have forgotten about the PC version entirely.

There's a very dedicated modding community at Qhimm that have been working hard to get the game to work with no hitches on modern day systems, as well as upgrade the graphics and fix the translation errors. That and a re-release of the PC version in digital format would be more money for SquareEnix, and we all know how much they love making money off FF7. ;P

WEll, i don't know about FF7 specifically, but I'm pretty sure GOG definitely wants Square-Enix on board (*cough* Eidos *cough*)

And Eidos is such a supporter of digital delivery I am surprised it hasn't happened yet. DRM might be the issue but they were never a super DRM-heavy company. It might be licensing that is the problem... needing worldwide licensing for every game probably holds back a lot more GOG releases than we realize.

Well I really don't doubt that we will get FF7 on here as soon as SquareEnix joins GoG (with Eidos on board)

Because let's be honest, I dont think any other DD service has FF7 on the PC, if GoG would put out the game here it would be a very big seller

I just recently got my old PC copy of FF7 working again with help from Qhimm, they have done some absolutely amazing work on this game.

It would be great to see the game show up on GOG (mostly because that means the rest of Squeidos would come along for the ride), but FF7 in particular would be problematic. While the fixes that Qhimm have produced do wonders to get the game running on modern systems, I wouldn't expect any of that work to be included in any potential GOG release. GOG already sells a number of games that could benefit from existing fan created patches and enhancements, but they can't legally include that work in a retail release. All of the games that fall into that category will already work without those patches, they just look and work better with them; FF7 will never be able to make that claim and GOG would never knowingly sell a game that simply will not work on its own (again, it happened once before, it was really bad... still probably is, I don't think they ever fixed the game in question).

True, they can't include them with the game itself, but that doesn't mean they can't inform fans of where to get them. Let's not forget Duke Nukem 3D, where the guys at GOG posted a list of their recommended mods for the game (including the fan HD pack) right there in the store description.

They could simply write at the bottom of the description something like "If you're having problems getting the game to run, try using the fan patch available at Qhimm." and then link to it. :)

EDIT: Another case in point, GOG running an interview with the guys of ScummVM, a program which can be used to play a lot of the older adventure games on here.

But FF7 will never, ever work on modern machines without that patch from Qhimm. The problems people are going to have with FF7 are not a question of "if", they are an absolute certainty, unlike the games they already sell that have fan patches available, such as Duke 3D.

GOG simply cannot sell a completely broken product. Not only would it be incredibly bad customer service (especially in light of the previous occurrence), it goes against the very principle this site was created for: classic games that actually run on modern hardware and OSes.

About the only way I might see this happening is if Squeidos either strikes some kind of deal with Aali to compensate him (her?) for the work done in creating the OpenGL driver or just buy it outright, which would very likely mean that the driver would no longer be made available to the general public. It would force people to re-buy the game from GOG (or any other DD service that ends up hosting it), which I'm sure many would be happy to do, but I have to wonder if that would really be cost-effective for Squeidos. GOG has a partnership deal with ScummVM and DOSBox. That deal makes sense, considering how many games those products allow them to sell (roughly a third of GOG's entire library). Aaali's driver would only affect FF7, not really worth arranging any kind of deal with GOG.

definitely better than alot games self-proclaimed "pc gamers" consider great. would you mind explaining what a pc gamer is perhaps, following statistics you primary play Sims and Wow?
Btw, there is an attempt to get FF7 running fine on current systems: Q-Gears. Havent followed it in years though

Good for you, the only game I likedin that list is P:T. And no, I wont explain for you whats so great in FF7 since you can read that in enough reviews. If its not to your taste then fine, but thats has nothing to do with being a "pc gamer" or trollish crap like that.

Ok i feel a bit sorry now for being a troll if you consider this and to be honest i did not even try it but i checked some youtube gameplay videos and i thought it is nothing special. And well i do not really hate consoles but what i really don't like is this multiplattforming and the games are then a piece of junk, not only on pc but on the very consoles as well. I mean an ego-shooter with a gamepad ?

You likely got blinded by the rather childish look of FF7 (and the german translation is not helping btw) - its has a fair bit off Japanese "Quirkiness" aswell. But the story is still deep and involving, the world map is big and there are tons of sidequests, the battlesystem and leveling through weaponslots is great. It of course still wont mean it appeals to everyone.

I agree with the rest, I really hate how everything is going mainstream nowadays.

Well if it would come on PC here on GoG i will consider it but the graphic style is for me really a "total letdown" i hate nothing more than this Walt Disney Style it's not my cup of tea.
If you look on the games tody both for pc and consoles. I mean on pc there is almost only crap now for the last 6 years. On consoles it's pretty much the same. The very reason behind this is multiplattforming and even worse they try to bring games on a console which play out really bad with a gamepad. It's mainly ego-shooter, West RPG's and yes even RTS they try to bring for consoles. I mean let's check the ego-shooter's. With a gamepad it's Auto-Heal, Auto-Aim, Auto-Everything....
West RPG's ? Just look what happened to bioware with dragon age 2, a total disgrace
And RTS there shouldn't even be a discussion.

Ok fair enough, but you could miss out on a fine game underneat it. Personally I like the Japanese approach to RPGs as they continually try to change and evolve the mechanics, sometimes it works well and sometimes it wont. With eg. Bioware its always the same thing, they dont want to take any risks - always the same setting lifted from Tolkien, always the same mechanics lifted from AD&D boardgames which IMHO doesnt fit a computergame well, always the same pausable battles which put them as bad compromise between roundbased combat (but not as tactical) and realtime combat(but not as comfortable like RTS games). I guess its perfect if thats all you like and all you ever want... but on the other hand if you dont like one Bioware game you dont like any of them (I am in this boat).
Personally I dont like any cRPG game but Fallout1/2 and P:T.

Dragon Age 1 turned out fine (or so I heard, I dint like it =) ) while being on console aswell. Console FPS could be controlled with mouse+KB aswell (UT3 does this) or with some of the motion controls.

What annoys me more is how incredible generic everything has to be nowadays, shooters need to be like CoD, RTS needs to be like Starcraft, RPGs being shitty shooters with less depth than GTA (hello Bethesda) or the same formula as 15 years ago (hello Bioware).
