It's not about you winning, its about the other guy losing.

Pacifism is great when it's needed, but at times you need to step up. If you lose your life and then someone else loses their life on top of it, your intervention is pointless.
If you are going to get face to face with them, Lecture them after you've disarmed them and made them far less of a threat.
LOL
And you just made my day.

Scenario 1I actually happened to me. I went out with some friends, stayed out late and then drove home. On the way I decided to stop at a convenience store for some Gatorade. I walked in the door and there was this kid (about 17 I guess) with a snub nosed revolver pointed at the cashier. He turned the gun on me and I offered him my wallet. When he took his eyes off me to grab the wallet I grabbed the gun, yanked it from his hand and hit him with it. The cashier came around with a wooden stick, like a broom handle ore wooden dowel, and started beating the kid with it. I put the gun on the counter, picked up my wallet, said something to the cashier (I have no memory of what I actually said) and walked out. I drove home and once safe in the driveway I sat in my truck shaking and crying uncontrollably for about 20 minutes.
I also had a similar experience to scenario 2. I had gone out with some friends and as we were leaving the bar we saw a guy getting harrassed by 3 other guys. I'm not sure who thought of it first but we all started walking that way to help break up the situation. Just then a truck pulled up and a few more guys jumped out of the back and they all started attacking the one guy. We broke into a run. I punched one guy in the back of the head and pulled another off the victim. I saw one of my friends kick another guy in the stomach. At that point all the assailants jumped in the truck and sped away. The guy got up and thanked us profusely. I told him something along the lines of "I don't know who you are, I don't care to know but get off the streets ASAP"
As for scenario 3, it would depend on the situation and the area. If I could get in close to the mugger unseen or if it is happening on the other side of a busy street, my response would be different. I have only called 911 once, so I'm not against reaching out for help. However sometimes I don't have the 15-20 minutes to wait for the police to show up.

Fun fact! "Fight or flight" is a bit of a misnomer. There's also another physical response: Freeze.

I wasn't implying that a person would -want- to freeze! When adrenaline kicks in, you may not have a choice. That's why "fight or flight" is a misnomer.

The thing is, it's only a thought exercise. Unless it actually happens, we don't know for certaint how we'd each react. For all you know, you might charge in and help the assailed person - proclaimed pacifism or not. And even in my self-armed examples, I might be frozen in fear. Many years ago, in a couple situations not quite as dire as those described, I've charged in to help. But who's to say that would happen next time? Maybe my older and wiser(?) self would have the preservation synapse kick in and send me running away.
I hope we never have to find out, but that's really the only way to know.

So I guess its more about where you go and what you do than how you react. Stay Safe.
