I agree; it's just a ridiculous "holiday" and the only goal is to get people to spend money on flowers and jewelry and food.
If you love someone, you shouldn't have to be prodded to express it on one particular day, and especially not by spending money. Unfortunately, so many people buy into it that if you don't, then it becomes "You don't love me anymore!"

Alright I have to admit yes I messed up on the title of the Thread and for that I'm eternally happy because some of the responses to it have been freaking Hilarious! Grade A+ Comedy right here.
Now I get its a stupid Holiday but as some of you have said its an entire month of reminding those that are single that they have some how failed at life which I entirely disagree with and am happy to see a lot of you agree with me in this.
To the person/person's that are single live on there own no help needed paid off that car and work a 40 hour a week job. I'm right there with you but as the last two years have proven those with a steady income and life apparently aren't any better than the dip shit at McDonald's flipping burgers for minimum wage. Which was a sad truth I found out about 1 year ago.
Anyway please keep the comments coming there actually brightening up my day and I thank you all for it!

The question is if you really disagree with that notion, why does it bug you so much and dampen your mood? Especially if you're aware of the mechanisms behind that holiday. Did someone tell it to your face that you failed at life because you're single? Or is that just some evil little voice whispering in your head betraying certain insecurities? Pretending to know how other people see you? I hope that doesn't come across as an offense, it's an honest question that I think is worth asking, especially since I'm very familiar with such voices myself.
(Great, now I also sound schizophrenic.) ;)

Normally it doesn't bother me to much granted I absolutely hate the fact that I'm single and would much prefer a ball and chain around my neck :) but since I've yet to fit my neck to any yoke having an entire month given to shoving it in my face 24/7 groceries stores, movie theaters, radio, ect... makes that little voice of annoyance more persistent than it would normally be during any other given month.
So I wouldn't say I'm insecure more just annoyed with it being shoved in my face. Plus being aware of the mechanism of the Holiday doesn't mean they still don't work on a person.
Hope that makes sense!

If it makes you feel any better I am single and do not feel like I have "failed at life", being single is a valid choice and more and more men in their late thirties to mid fifties are making it every year. In the first world there's many extremely interesting things to do to fill up your time. Many of them are way more productive than the comparably unimpressive act of popping out another kid into an overpopulated world.

There'll be a lot of single girls not wanting to be alone on the 14th. So who's complaining?

In the long run I want more than that too. But it sure as hell beats being all lonely and sad, doesn't it? Sometimes people are too concerned with the bigger picture. You have to have some sense of spontaneity too. And hey, you never know. It might just turn into something.
You've got to get out there and try and create opportunities, or the big picture will remain bleak. As ultimately the big picture is filled with the little things.

Navagon: I never really understood why people think it's a sad night to be single. Some people are blinded by pessimism to the possibilities around them.
My boyfriend and I have drifted apart, he said he needed time to step back. Considering he is going to school full-time and working the graveyard shift, I really don't think he has time to have a girlfriend. My transferring to a different college didn't help things either. I'm not bitter about this, at least it was nice while it lasted. While it didn't work out, but there are other fish in the sea. Maybe I'll find the right man for me someday or maybe not. I don't think of being single as a sign of failure that other people make it out to be. It is better to be single than to be in a relationship with someone who isn't right for you.
For all those who had a breakup, enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTFI9sQdpG
