you shoot people, and sometimes you shoot them in bullet time, and the lights flicker sometimes, and there's blood on the wall sometimes, and there's a little girl messing stuff up like the one from The Ring
First one is one of the best shooters of all time. The horror stuff is just mood.
Well it's not much of a horror, so i guess it's worth.

Have it all, collected trough the years.
The girl from FEAR is really scary. I had a nightmare about her once. I was a part of a elite team sent in to kill her. She killed everyone including me. I shot her several times but she didn't take any damage from my shotgun. We had no chance. I easily get nightmares from stuff. it's annoying.

If you mean F.E.A.R., it was kind of fun for the first time... but later the story becomes a joke and any monster you can kill\hurt becomes less scary.
At least that's how I see the series.
Think of american horrors. Nothing really scary except ocasional jump scares.

But as shooter games - they are awesome. I played only FEAR 1 + exps and FEAR 2, keep that in mind. But they are great games. One of the best enemy AI's in the game. You'll see that the first time they flank you.

Weird because it really really wants to go for the Asian horror thing. It's kind of silly to say American Horror is just jumpscares.

It feels more like american remake of a japanese horror. (like Ring remake - they ruined everything and only scary girl remained good enough) And just by putting a scary girl, you don't make a japanese horror.

Trust me. I've seen like 800 horror movies :P

Japanese horror is all about suspense, building up, dark atmosphere, only clues here and there. Think of Silent Hill the game. FEAR is just Alma jumping outo f nowhere here and there.

and for the jump scares... Most of the horror movies made in america now are exactly and only that. I've seen all bigger horror movies for last few years.

Without being going over the top like some of the other posters. It's a great shooter that has aged very nicely. The creepy atmosphere is quite odd to put into a shooter and makes it stand out a little. Unlike some, it won't damage my ego admitting it made me squirm a few times.

And you are probably exposed to more horror so you are more desensitized considering I have been avoiding the horror genre for many years now.

You don't need to worry about it being a horror story. It more gives a creepy atmosphere whilst blowing up a lot of bad guys. But if you've got a good sound system for example it can surprise you in places. It adds to the experiences. :D

Well I've seen 800 horror movies too hehe. There are loads of great western horror movies without prominent uses "jump scares' and there are loads of Asian horror movies with a shitload of classic "jumpscares" like the ghost in the mirror or behind you or something happening on a staircase. It's a really silly and unfair generalization to make.

Beware that there is one time you need to grovel on your knees through really tight tunnel in F.E.A.R. 1 and the game wants to scare you, of course.

I don't like a horror genre because I'm very nervous playing them. I played F.E.A.R. 1 and I enjoyed it for what it was. It had a catchy athmosphere, shooting was fun and I liked following story which is however kind of crappy. I doubt I would be able to finish it without a help (someone played the spooky parts for me while I have done shooty ones).
I just don't know what the horror movies has to do with the game LOL
