Well the first one is one of my favourite FPS games and one of the last great ones. The second one was quite nice. I haven't played the third one because I heard it was ruined for the consoles.
I remember playing it when it came out and I was really hyped up. I think I didn't really enjoy it because I was in the mood for a nice survival horror at the time and I ended up with a shooter. I kind of hated it for that but looking back I was too hard on it, it really is a good shooter with good AI and nice graphics, it would have been better if they didn't market it as a horror game.

F.3.A.R. or whatever they call it to be honest was not that bad. It was as good as the previous game.
F.E.A.R. - rapid firefights with very shifty and aggressive AI in clouds of dust and smoke. Horror is 90% harmless jump scares. More of the same in expansions.

F.E.A.R. 2 - generic as fuck linear shooter with no room for the AI to work besides flipping shelves. Combines even sadder attempts at horror with giant infinite-ammo mecha sections. Yes, it's a "horror" game with nearly-invulnerable mecha sections. The only plus is that the environments are more varied and less "50 shades of gray" than in FEAR 1.

F.E.A.R. 3 - Shit. Same as F.E.A.R. 2, only with levels ripping off CoD:MW 2, and more generic monsters spawning at random locations. Also, every level is spent collecting achievements for time in cover, number of kills, reloads, tossing performance and other useless crap. The counters reset every level, so this never stops. Points level you up, so your pockets can hold more ammo. Plot and scares are non-existent. This game should've been aimed at casual Serious Sam fans.

So each FEAR game is an inferior version of DOOM 3?

As much as I love Doom3, it's not as good as F.E.A.R.

Doom 3 could of really took a few notes from the original.

FEAR 1 has areas for fighting with multiple exits, nooks, crannies and covered paths, and the AI can use most of that. I've beaten Doom 3 just recently and is was just room after room of "Imp behind the door! Surprised yet?" - a lot like FEAR 2 and especially 3 (F3 even has imp-ish infernal doggies).
However the horror in FEAR series and Doom 3 is on the same level: artist going "I'll just put some intestines in this corner under this swinging light. Ahh... I need a sandwich!"

Not only that. They can spot flashlight, movement, send recons, split up, hide and wait, circle around you, sometimes they even use suppresive fire.

Great game. What I didn't like was hit detection. If you attack your enemies when they don't see you, 1 shot = kill, when they do see you - 5 headshots = kill :P

Well we have two options A. You haven't played the game or B. You didn't find it scary so you're trying to show off your "ego" and trying to impress people that it didn't scare you. I have seen B a few times on game forums, so I wouldn't rule that out either.

Are you sure thats not 5 head shots = because I can? I know I can't resist plowing bullets into their faces in slow motion. It looks sooo damn awesome, even for a game at it's age. :D

Well, it gets annoying when you fight 5 enemies at once and they just refuse to die :P I liked some effects in FEAR2 also - especially after shotgun to the face :P

langurmonkey: for $13.74 at Steam. Worth it for someone who doesn't like the horror genre?
no.

It is boring, repetitive, you do the same thing over and over again.
probably one of the worst games i had ever played . I dropped it with disgust 2/3 through. then tried to play from beginning 2 years later and didn't even manage to do half an hour before remembering why this game is so bad.

Talking about first one. no idea about other ones...
