orcishgamer: If they did they followed poor procedure and could have hurt someone, including themselves, for no reason. I suspect they did do their Rambo impression and kick in the door with assault rifles. It just makes them a bunch of douches, violating safety procedures so they look cool, and to scare people via the media.
What are you basing this on? I mean I know this is how it's always portrayed in film because it's exciting, but that doesn't mean it's how this actually played out in reality.

Unfortunately law-enforcement agencies behaving like para-military goon squads in situations where it's utterly uncalled for is becoming more and more common.
Ever since Columbia, MO SWAT injured a man and shot his dog (all on video) they changed there requirements for such action. SWAT use has dropped significantly since then. The charge? A few joints. Columbia is a college town.

lukipela: That was pretty irrelevant. This was not a SWAT team, nor was it a drug bust.
You're right. The topic was deviating and I was responding to the comments on armed enforcement but the quote didn't work.
My apologies.
It's the reporter calling it a raid. Who the hell listens to any kind of stupid panic buzzwords like that from the news before actually reading the reports or actually seeing something having been filmed for proof?
avatar
lukipela: Everyone is calling it a raid, not just the single reporter. Maybe you should read the reports, like you claim, instead of trying to be the edgy guy?
Everyone is using the word raid, and it's all so similar that it nearly sounds like everyone just read the same single article and then went about repeating it. Amazing lack of detail here.
avatar
nondeplumage: That's entirely because of the morality police on drugs and the racists on immigration. Let them out and you'd have 40-60% fewer people in jail or prison, or more depending on where you looked.
avatar
orcishgamer: This is true, the vast majority of our prisoners are there directly or indirectly due to our war on drugs.
Not to deviate too much, but this needs to be emphasized. The war on drugs accounts for an overwhelming majority of people in state and federal pen.

As far as what the FBI did, I don't have much sympathy for the guy, but on the other hand the FBI was a bit stronghanded.

Great work guys! That's one guy who won't upload movies anymore! That'll keep the country safe!

"(..)This investigation is excessive and a waste of tax dollars."

I couldn't agree more.
Now look... Corporations pay taxes too and deserve to... wait... hold on... no, sorry, I was mistaken.

cogadh: Violating the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005 makes what he did a criminal offense, not a civil one, hence the necessity of involving the FBI. If convicted, the guy could get up to 5 years in prison for each film he uploaded; 10 years if he was in any way paid for what he did. He probably does face additional civil penalties on top of the criminal ones, but those aren't the FBI's business.

lukaszthegreat: heh. no wonder you guys have the highest number of prisoners in the world per capita.
You would think... but actually, that ain't the reason :-)

"Dammit, we need more taxes from other people to keep paying for our own fuck ups!" isn't exactly a stinging criticism against the businesses.

That's some really messed up logic you have there.

They evade taxes yet lots of tax payers money is spent on helping them out and you don't see anything wrong with that?

They evade taxes and basically break the law yet demand that the FBI, which is paid with tax payer's money, is used to catch others who break the law and you see nothing wrong with that?

Or in short: any company that evades contributing to society and then demands society does as it pleases, should be told to f**k off instead of so much money being wasted on a single individual that didn't harm anyone except that very same company who screwed society over by not paying taxes. To me, that's poetic justice if anything.

You have a weird way of reading. All I got from that is "corporations should pay their taxes". But maybe my english is just bad.

eagerness of your government to throw people in jail. drugs, copyright infringement, jaywalking, not picking up a can when told...

I thought it was cheap labor because prisons are private run sweat shops in the US where they make millions off prisoners fashioning stuff like license plates?
