Holy shit. I am playing it right now on my epsxe. Thanks for the tip, lad!
If someone got a Snes emulator those games are recommended:
ActRaiser
Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma(added with more plattforming)
For the PSX:
Alundra(Zelda with more heavy combat and plattforming)
Vagrant Story
Also, another games waiting for GoG-approval:
Golden Axe
Nox
Severance: Blade of Darkness
Demon Stone
Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Silver
Legacy of Kain Series
Hey, isn't Kingdom Hearts an Hack'n'Slash game aswell?

How DARE you mention that monstrosity of a game series!

TheCowSaysMoo: the original nwn campaign

Rofl ... +1

If that's hack n' slash I suggest that entire trilogy... I consider them platformers though.
The favourite would be (drumroll) Diablo 2: LOD. Then Titan Quest: IT, then the God of War series.

Tantrix: Not really that Hack and Slash, but the Sigma Shooters are close to the bloody hell of Diablo II:

If that counts, then I have to mention the classic rampage Robotron 2084.
There's a pretty good freeware update of it here.
The first Diablo, Gauntlet, Druid, Rogue, DoomRL.
Wishbone noted Barbarian, while i always seen it as a fighting game, i guess it might count.;P
And since, Gauntlet and Druid count in my eyes i'll have to say..
WIZARD OF WOR
Cheesy soundtrack not required.;P
Oh, and Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past.

I may have misunderstood the definition, but I don't think you can call it a hack n' slash when your only weapon is a laser rifle.
Still, a classic game, that I spent quite a lot of time with as a kid :-)

Yeah, but Sands of Time was more like Batman AS. Pretty much plattforming and a combat where you are superior to your foes.
WW increases the combat dramaticly. You can kill your enemies in various way without needing any kind of QTE. Also, dynamic combat is never a bad thing.
The sequel is really gory and I consider it as a hack and slash game at it finest.
@Rohan15:
Sue me, the first game was pretty fun, except the long annyoing cutscenes and mary sue shota faggotry. Never played the sequel and don't plan to.

But, all You had in Barbarian was a sword.;P
I don't think hack n' slashes depend on the quantity of the armament.
Though, WoW would be more like "shoot n kill", but the basic principle remains the same. You, them, dungeon, death. Alien Breed might be a very nice example of the genre evolution here;)
Though, some say, HNS require the levels to be procedurally generated, and the story optional, but all in all, everything evolves... [but considering modern games] everything SHOULD evolve. Hence i'd say WoW is an early HNS in a different setting, now we argue laser rifles, why not argue spell casting, the were no spells in Rogue afaik. ;)
Can't believe no-ones mentioned 'Severance: Blade of Darkness' yet...
An older game that still wipes the floor combat wise with much out there today.
IMHO, of course...;o)
Only one I ever enjoyed was Diablo 2 with expansion. All others just seem, well, underwhelming. D2 also wasn't completely the best. It lost it's atmosphere for a slightly less drab one. The first Diablo was spookier, had more atmosphere, had more background with that giant book they called a manual. D2 was better actual gameplay.

You misunderstand me. It's not the number of weapons that's important, it's the type of weapons. The name says it all really. Hack and slash. Meaning combat with edged weapons, or melee weapons at any rate.
Ooh, how could I have forgotten Divine Divinity? And no one else has mentioned it yet!
