Out of curiosity, which is your favorite of those? Because I actually think I prefer Blue Shift, even though it's so short.

EDIT: hmm... although Opposing force had the most weapons

ovoon: I played Persona 4 first, so it's my favorite game of all time. Persona 3 is in my top five for sure though. I just didn't like the character development as much. It felt like there were some pointless characters that were just there to be cool party members. Like the dog?

SpirlaStairs: Yeah the dog was kind of pointless.

The reason is probably like Persona 3 so much is because it's the first game in the series I played. Also the ending was really good.
The normal ending was, but please tell me you're not talking about the FES epilogue, because I really didn't like what they did to the normal ending there.
Fallout 2, then Civilization and then Tie Fighter...
Hard to say.

Freespace 2 was my childhood game that I still adore.

Going on timeplayed and still wanting to play more - Dragon Age series, Witcher series and Dawn of War. Invested so much time in all those games.
Monster Hunter
or
Ultima Online
Since just plopping down DOOM is too darned easy, I feel like saying my top three or something!

1. DOOM. Yeah, you could've predicted this early on, but indeed, it is the best game ever. I'm sure just about all of you have tried this sucker out, so I don't really need to say much more about it.
2. Berzerk. It seems like this game is kind of unheard of, but it's an arcade game where you navigate mazes of electric walls, shooting robots (who can really talk!) and avoiding one of the more... imaginative video game enemies, Evil Otto, an evil BOUNCING SMILEY FACE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
3. Super Mario Land 2. Simply the best Mario game I've played in my time, one of my childhood favorites, just now rediscovering it since I got it as a Christmas gift, and I've almost beaten it.
Final Fantasy 7
Tough choice between Hero's Quest / Quest For Glory 1, and TIE Fighter...

My favorite is Half-Life. I cannot say if it is better than OF or BS or not, but I feel kinda sentimental or nostalgic about it. I bought my fist PC just to play this game. To have a PC of my own meant a lot to me back in 98.

Major fracture detected, automatic medical system engaged, morphine administered
Work safe, work smart. Your future depends on it.
I refuse to go another step!
Time to choose...

This gives me a nerdgasm! I still got these quotes in my brain. I do not know how often I played through HL. Must be something between 5 and 10 times.

Nah, I barely bothered with The Answer.

I mean to me P3's ending was the most memorable part of the game, it seemed kind of pointless to have an extra chapter after that.

An extra chapter that makes everything depressing.

Anyways, P4 had an excellent ending as well, both true ending and good ending.
If it came down to my top game it'd probably be a tie between Master of Orion 2 and Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Complete.

Surprisingly, I had never played HoMM 3 until just a few years ago (sometime before GOG came on the scene) - I kind of missed out on a lot of games around the turn of the millennium and the early 2000s - though I had played the first two before it in the mid '90s, which I quite enjoyed but (puzzlingly in this case) didn't think were the bee's knees. There were always one or two people saying extremely good things about part 3 that I finally gave in and hunted down a copy out of sheer curiosity, and boy did I get hooked good!

As for MoO 2, I snapped up a copy as soon as it was released - a definite rarity back then for me - after repeated reading of its original reviews. I had a real big soft spot for MoO 1, and now that the game was becoming bigger and better it was pretty much decided for me before any part of me could even consider saying "no". Turns out my love for the game was so big I just had to show it to my friends, so I brought the game to their places so they could check it out, and in turn they ended up buying it too. That didn't happen often (as good as never again). We also had some quite fun hotseat sessions with it back then.

Anyway, it certainly helps that both of these games have pretty much infinite replay value. Yes, I've had incredible fun with other strategy, adventure, role-playing, shooter, space sim games and so on, but the above mentioned never truly get old. They sure are getting on in age, but they're just as great now as they were then. It truly shows that great gameplay and core design trumps all. That doesn't mean I play them incessantly. There are longer stretches of time when I may not touch them at all, but it's always a good time coming back to them when I feel the urge.

I remember playing Nintendo games as a little kid and having the best time with Donkey Kong and Mario, I still enjoy them now but they weren't as fun as when I was 6. In terms of modern games I would have to say WoW, HOWEVER it's only fun if you have a lot of real friends with whom to play. If you're playing solo it's like being tossed into amateur hour and having to put up with complete assholes while sinking further and further into addiction. So I will have to go with the Baldur's Gate series as my favourite games that don't involve sacrificing your life and that isn't coated with nostalgia.
