Does anyone know how to enable subtitles for all dialogue in Far Cry? Is there a fan mod for that? Is there a way to boost volume to voices? Especially the scientist guy who's always talking to me on the hand communicator. He's really hard to hear.

Far Cry doesn't have subtitles. End of story.

What about the other things I asked about? Fan supplied captions? Volume tweaking?

There are no mods that I'm aware of to do captions.

I'm pretty sure there's only a master volume control? They even had only that in Far Cry 2, until they were forced to patch it in.

Was Crytek even involved in Far Cry 2, or was it all Ubisoft? I don't think the story was even remotely related the original. Makes me wonder why they slapped the "Far Cry" franchise label on it.

Nope Far Cry 2 was nothing to do with Crytek. Doesn't even run on the same engine.

Just Ubisoft as far as I know. Nevertheless, Far Cry 2 is quite amazing, the higher difficulty the better. Broken but amazing.
I've been wondering about Far Cry - I tried one of the demos last week and could only play for a few minutes without dying, the difficulty seems insanely high even on easy. How is it?

It's high. You can't expect to autowin on easy, in fact you'll get slaughtered on any difficulty if you try to just take everything head on. You need to try and avoid big battles untl you have big guns, basically.

Ohh, so basically they handed me a linear sample of a nonlinear game. That explains my general sense of "what the deuce am I supposed to DO with this?"

I mostly just wanted to see if it would run, because when I get a bit of money that's my next video game purchase :D
One of the neat things about Far Cry is that there is the "obvious" path from A to B, which usually leads you through a slew of mercs, but if you search hard enough you can find anywhere between one and three alternate paths. A prime example is when you first pick up your binoculars, and right in front of you is an island loaded with mercs. You can swim directly towards the island and alert the mercs while you're still in the water, and probably get shot to death there, or you can swim around to the left, and find another beach that leads to lots of trees that you can use to sneak up and shoot a gas tank or something.

Is it linear mission based, loose mission based, or random freeform run and gun? And do enemies respawn, or is the goal to 'clean out' various areas?

It has a bit of both, although for a supposedly complete "free-roaming" game there's a high corridor shooter factor later on.

Some levels are like the first though, with basically a whole island, or sometimes several, to just explore and find the best way to complete the objectives on. Charging head first into battle never is.

I don't mind some linearity as long as you have options for completing goals - one reason I'm enjoying Just Cause so much is I find shooters where you have to figure out the developer's way of completing a level rather irritating. I'd much rather use some creativity.

About the "free-roaming" thing, if you travel too far you "summon" a killer helicopter. Of course, "too far" is relative. You can go anywhere you can see, like to all the little islands that are just put there to "fill out" the archipelago the game takes place in, but the "free-roaming" thing is meant for finding alternate paths to your objective. Straying too far away from the general area of your objective, like to one of the furthest islands when your objective is deep in the jungle, will summon the chopper.

Of course, if you ever get anywhere near "too far out", the guy on your communicator will warn you. Once.
