GastonArg: well that's what I mean, the water thing plot it's very good, it was very poorly implemented and executed specially the ending which was atrocious but again the main plot but decent enough, the fallout new vegas on the other hand was pretty lame from the get go..not bad but just average
But they could just filter the radioactive water through clean sand to get rid of most of the radiation :) And irradiated water doesn't seem to be such a big problem when every doctor you encounter can get you fixed, no matter how much radiation you take ;)
I didn't like goodie-goodie vs. baddie-baddie aspect of F3.
And I liked NV's plot and factions: Legion fanatics, NCR bureaucratic assholes (well, you mostly meet nice soldiers... only if you side with them they show their true colors) and ultra-pragmatic House (my personal choice). Much more ambiguity, which I love.

darthspudius: New Vegas was not my cup of tea. It was simply too bland with not much to explore.
That is my biggest fear :P Even towards the end of Fallout 3 I felt like I didn't see all the wasteland had to offer which did wonders for the game's re-playability. I was right. I completely missed the junkjard with dogmeat's offspring, the 'forest' where bob was and another friend of mine somehow completely missed tenpenny towers. I was hoping though that new vegas would capture a bit more of the atmosphere of Falllout 1,2 with its desert theme, compared to fallout 3. Did you also find the world of new vegas noticeably smaller than fallout 3?
I did not like New Vegas either, but saying F3 is better GAME than it is madness. New Vegas didn't feel like a Fallout game to me because it didn't feel post-apocalyptic, for lack of a better term it was post-post-apocalyptic, it was too civilized and developed, too much time has past since the original game, it just felt dumb that their was this city New Vegas untouched by the nuclear war in the middle of the desert. I hated lots of about Fallout 3, the writing, the quests, the characters, the voice-acting, the FPS combat, the fact that attributes/stats don't really do anything, but it did have a very post-nuclear feel of "searching through the ruins" and scavenging for supplies.

New Vegas also had this really annoying American patriotism vibe about it which rubbed me the wrong way.
The way I see it, younger gamers or gamers who came late into the series (post-classic Fallouts) will enjoy the Bethesda titles more. The same goes for those who prefer free exploration as opposed to exploration but with a tight, gripping story.

I can't stand turn-based stuff, myself, it's a pet peeve of mine and there's no point in denying it: I find it boring and archaic, and no "but, groze, it's STRATEGIC, bro!" argument will win me over. Ever. Still, the first two Fallouts are one of the very few exceptions I'm willing to make. I love the fact they managed to tie gripping storytelling with free exploration, engaging setting, a non-black-and-white morality system and a multiple approach to quests design all in one. Sure, the graphics weren't groundbreaking even back then, and the Bethesda Fallouts look gorgeous, but they fail to nail pretty much everything else (especially Fallout 3).

Fallout 3 has a cool setting. But, to me, it's really all it has going for it. It falls prey to the usual "Bethesdification": they have awesome properties with complex lore and background, but turn everything into huge -- admittedly impressive -- kind-of-living worlds that the player is free to explore. But that's it. Whatever story and plot they manage to throw in is so un-engaging and unimpressive, compared to their premise of free world roaming, that no one really cares about moving the plot forward and the player ends up quitting it altogether -- after an insanely obsessive number of hours spent roaming (and enduring the mandatory Bethesda bugs). New Vegas was an improvement over 3, but it still doesn't quite match all that 1 and 2 did exceedingly well. Though the story, at least, is there, and wonderfully written and delivered.

It's a matter of preference, like it's been said before, and of what was the first Fallout you played, or the one that impressed you or suited your style best. I never played Tactics, even though I nabbed my free copy of it during the Farewell Fallout GOG Promo/Giveaway, because, honestly, everything bearing the word 'tactic' or any variation scares me to death. Tactic-squad-turn-base-strategic-plan-a-fight-like-an-army-general is not something I'm keen on experiencing, sorry. So, of the four I played, here's how I rank them:

1. Fallout 2 (I know, it isn't as innovative as the first one, and all that jazz, but I just got a bit more immersed in this one)
2. Fallout
3: Fallout: New Vegas
4. Fallout 3 (kill it with fire. Or even more aggressive than usual Radscorpions)
:( I haven't played NV yet, but I still wanna rank Fallouts. Sorry for ruining this thread :o Hopefully I'll play Fallout NV in August.

Fallout 1 - May be smaller in scope than other Fallouts, but I still have to say that it's my favourite.
Fallout Tactics - An awkward (and in my mind, unsuccessful) mix of RPG and tactics. I still mostly enjoyed it though.
Fallout 2 - I couldn't stand the barrage of awful fourth wall/referential jokes. Really grating and not even close to subtle.
Fallout 3 - Such a broken and poorly design mess =/

You mean NCR trying to restore US with everything that was good about it... and allowing the bad things to slip through? I helped those poor soldiers sent to fight slavers parties... and then at the Dam told Oliver what I think about him and NCR's politics :) He wasn't happy...

With good squad, stats and equipment you don't need to be a strategic genius to beat it :)

I never played Fallout: NV due to DRM-bullshit.
It always saddens me to hear so much good stuff about it, but no game is more worth then my consumer rights.

My ranking:

Fallout 1 (one of the best RPGs ever made)
Fallout 2 (buggy and unfinished great game, but there a great fan patches and a restoration project now :)
Fallout 3 (different kind of game but still a good one with some of the DLCs)
Fallout Tactics (not my favourite approach, fighting always was my least favourite part in the series)

It's as simple as that.

I want New Vegas DRM free!

The ending of Fallout 3 has got to go down as one of the most derpy crap I have ever witnessed, every faction in the battle had the same objective, to reactivate the water filter, but yet they just stuck this final battle in to be "EPIC!!!11". The enclave (who were supposed to be destroyed after FO2) sabotaged the very machine they wanted to activate, thereby killing themselves.

Then the player's death is retconned so they could make DLC.

Brian Fargo would never have made up such BS...
I feel like going on a post apocalyptic binge of sorts. Perhaps I should work overtime 12 hrs each day for a month and then take 2.5 weeks off completely and start :

1. Fallout
2. Fallout 2
3. Fallout 3 + broken steel (perhaps pit as well)
4. Stalker
5. Stalker call of priyapatat or something

Not sure if 2.5 weeks will be enough though. I've tried metro 2033 but to me it pales in comparison to Stalker.
Don't forget "The Fall".
It's better than Fallout 3 and certainly better than Fallout Tactics.

I have never played NV but I want to badly, but for the ones I have played it would go

Fallout 3
Fallout 2
Fallout 1
Fallout Tactics
New Vegas is my no. 1 in the franchise.

Followed by

Fallout 2
Fallout
Fallout 3
Fallout 1
Fallout Tactics (Edit : because I really love the real time combat/squad mechanics they put in)
Fallout 2 (I really have verisimilitude issues with this one, and it is the latest of the oldest that I played)
....
Fallout 3

NV is on my "to put in the backlog" list
