jgresham: The OS is likely not the only problem, but the specific problems that most people are complaining about are pretty much only happening on Win7. Drivers, hardware, who knows what the additional x-factor is, but without Win7 it won't kill the game.

If the OS was the CAUSE of the problem then everyone running Win7 would experience it. They don't. It could be a recent driver, it could be a conflict with Win7 and a driver, it could be all kinds of shit, but Win7 itself is not the root cause or it would be repeatable on every Win7 machine.

Anyway we're arguing semantics so whatevs.
Well obviously it is a combination of Windows 7 and something else preventing some people from playing but obviously not the Windows 7 OS by itself.

Regardless, it isn't Microsoft's problem, it's Bethesda's problem. You make the game fit the OS and the common system attributes, not the other way around.

I've just played and beaten the game on my Windows 7 64-bit quad core rig. Steam version.
It kept crashing on me as well to begin with, but with editing the .ini file (as described in the link posted by Andanzas). After that it worked like a charm. Well, except it had some problems with alt-tabbing back and forth. But no random crashes whatsoever.

I suggest you try the .ini fix, and report back.

Never found any problems with Fallout: New Vegas on my Windows 7 and that uses the same engine maybe same problems.

What exactly is the problem? Does it crash on startup or during the game?

Mine crashed during the game until I set it to run as administrator and XP SP3 mode, since then it has been fine - retail version though. Still worth a shot though.

I start a new game and it says Fallout 3 has stopped working.

I got the disc version GOTY. The only issues I got with it was, that it started crashing AFTER I installed the DLC content. But the official patch took care of that.

Not sure how obvious that is when the claim is it is not working on Windows 7.

Now it seems to be working flawlessly, but I've only played a few minutes, so can't be sure.
I installed FO3 GOTY retail on W7 64-bit and had crashes too.
Updating, combined with that ini-file change reduced the amount of crashes to almost 0 for me.
On a side note, I never used the FO3 launcher but always used the Fallout Mod Manager instead.

As mentionned, last time i checked for myself it would crash on the intro, no matter what.

StingingVelvet: There is some weird reason it is listed as incompatible on Steam. I think it's more prone to crash or something.

Worked fine for me.
I´ve had those kind of problems with my computer.
