lukaszthegreat: no activation with retail version.
standard cd in drive to play.

OmegaX: I know that but the OP was asking about the digital download version from GamersGate. The cd check from FO3 is SecuROM too though.

no. he asked whether fo3 has drm. he wants to buy from gamersgate which has drm according to you
so i presented him with alternative which does not have drm.
*smug face*
I have F3 GOTY version on disk, which only has a securom disk check. That I can deal with.
With GFWL, you can just use the methods others listed, or use the EXCELLENT xliveless mod that disables GFWL completely, and even has the option to remove the name from the title screen. I think delixe already mentioned this.
Also, if you create a OFFLINE GFWL account, no limits get used up and there is no stupid 15 activation limit.
Hope this helps. :)

Ok, point taken but your alternative still has DRM in form of a SecuROM disc check. Whether the OP considers it permissive enough is up to him.
I don't have experience with the retail version but assuming that the patches for retail and digital are the same then after he runs the patch it'll automatically execute the launcher which is protected and it'll install SecuROM regardless. He can then uninstall SecuROM and forget about the launcher because the game executable is DRM-free.

every game has the disc check. FO3, Oblivion, Max Payne... been like that since the first cd game.
if he has problem with that he shouldn't play games then :)
and isn't launcher required to run mods?

No. They just need to be added to the ini. Additionally, if you want to use mods you should seriously consider disabling GFWL and launch the game using FOSE.

Apparently SecuROM 7 disc check is not as "simple" as its previous versions. My only experience with it was the retail version of Tomb Raider Anniversary and it did install something on my PC but I'm not quite sure what it was because I uninstalled it right away and I had to manually erase registry entries associated with it that remained after that.

it is that simple. it does exactly the same thing computer games did for decades.

Navagon: 1. That's not taking into account activation limits. Which may even be hidden and unknown to even the publisher. I don't know if this affects Fallout 3 as it's apparently something like 15 usually and I haven't installed it that many times yet.

Renting a game for $15 isn't bad. Renting a game for $60 is.

Which is exactly why I want to know what titles were affected by this misuse of DRM* and from which titles it has been removed.
*Not including Bioshock 2. The only game from publishers dumb enough to actually still want Microsoft DRM in their game.
Also, if you have the retail version the disk check in only done during setup; once its installed it doesn't need the DVD unless the hardware setup needs to be rerun.

Apparently the activation limit is a legacy feature in GFWL that should have been removed. Publishers themselves can request it to be changed, in the case of Relic/THQ they cliamed they didn't know about it and DOW2/Chaos Rising now has 99 activations.
At the end of the day this form of DRM only affects online play as in the case of games like Fallout 3 you can happily just run something like Fallout Mod Manager/FOSE or xliveless and you never ever have to deal with GFWL. Unless you really care about achievements.

You're required to log into GFWL for games like Arkham Asylum before you can even play it. I don't know what it's like with Bioshock 2 but I'd imagine it's the same deal there too. Implementation of GFWL doesn't seem to be universally the same.
