Well i been playing E::FE the last couple days. Is good game. Needs tuning and touches, of which will come ..but this release version is quite good. FE is very different than WOM. Very very different. FE has 4X big time. And one-more-turn-syndrome. And all the other things which make a 4X TBS fun. FE also adds new things to the TBS world. As well as does well the RPG and Tactical Combat. The game is quite good now, it will improve yet more. i see this game, with its future updates, to easily be in the running for 'game of the year'. Further expansion of this franchise (new games and exp/packs in the world of Elemental), and updates (content packs and tweaks, MP and mod sharing) to the original E::FE, ought put it in the running for 'game of the decade'. But some big things do need to be tweaked and expanded.

i can confirm that there is no DRM in the copy downloaded directly from Stardocks store. The game does not require steamworks. My copy comes directly from the developer and requires no third party client cop. The game doesn't run well on my WinXP 32bit machine, and i've been playing on the cloth map only, but Wardell has made public a private build of his which improves performance and makes AI tweaks. i'll be giving that a try within the hour. Despite the handicap of playing only on the cloth map and on small maps, i've been rightly enjoying E::FE. Look forward to playing it on a better rig someday. But for now, the game is still fun :)

draginol: A couple things.

(1) The game does not use Steamworks. Even the version on Steam doesn't use Steamworks. Downloading it is just a URL and huge setup.exe.

(2) Anyone who bought War of Magic in 2010 or before gets Fallen Enchantress for free. Hopefully, that will restore some of the lost confidence some people had with Stardock.

Psyringe: Hi Brad, nice to see you here. :)

Thanks for the clarification wrt Steamworks. The game is labeled as "Steamworks" on several places that I checked, but I guess the Steam/Steamworks difference confuses some of the shops and reviewers as well. Good to have that clarified.

I've spent some time thinking about what _could_ win me over to buy Fallen Enchantress, and I think the best way to convince me is a demo. I'm not one of the guys who's saying "Down with Stardock", or "Never again buy a game from them" - but I am skeptical if you really _can_ make this game work. If you can show me that (in an environment where I can experiment myself), then you might gain another customer. I don't know how your stance is toward a demo version though. I guess I'm not the first person to ask for one.

Also, while you're here, may I point out that there are some people here who would really, really like to buy some of Stardock's older games on GOG? :) I own most of them on Impulse (a remnant of my old TotalGaming.Net subscription), but I would really like to get away from Gamestop, and would probably rebuy them here if the price is right.
Cool news; I retrieved my old password from Stardock and to my delight I found my free copy of Encantress waiting for me. I was watching a let's play and decided to give it another shot. I'm happy. Thank you.

Psyringe: Although the game _should_ be right up my alley (I love turn-based strategy games, I love fantasy settings, I loved playing - and sometimes still play - Master of Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic, Age of Wonders, etc.), I have little to no interest in "Fallen Enchantress" at this point.

There are several reasons for this:

1. The game's predecessor failed so spectacularly, and on so many levels, that I'm now very careful about buying Stardock games. They had earned my trust before (Galactic Civilizations 1 and 2 were some of the very few games that I bought at full price, and they were worth it), but the horrendous, pitiful state of Elemental on release has annihilated this trust pretty effectively.

2. I'm not sure if they have the people to pull off such a project. Signing up Jon Shafer, the man whose design ideas botched Civilization V, as a campaign designer, didn't really diminish my skepticism.

3. According to beta testers, the game is still rough around the edges, and especially the enemy AI feels incomplete and plays atrociously bad.

4. The game is tied to Steamworks.

So, if they decide to offer a cheap non-Steamworks version some years along the road, I might bite, out of curiosity of how they tried to salvage that train wreck that "Elemental" came to be. But as a full-price Steamworks game? Naah, sorry.

I'll give Enchantress this - it's rock solid stable. So far, I'm having a good time with the game, but the overall difficulty is almost overwhelming. I guess that will change will I learn to play the game better. Overall it's a good effort from what I've seen thus far.

draginol: Remember, if you bought WOM, Fallen Enchantress is already yours, free.
A bit off topic :

I already own the boxed and digital version of WOM ( purchased both in 2010 at the same day from the Impulse store ) . Now i have two registration key of the game .
1, Can i gift away the retail CD key?
2, Can the recipient of the gift activate it on his Stardock account ?
3, Since it was purchased in 2010, will he also receive a free copy of FE ?
You'd have to ask Stardock support. If you already registered both copies, then both qualify for the free FE, but I'm not sure if it's transferable. Probably not.

If you did not register both, then you don't get the free Enchantress, but might be able to work with support if you can prove your actual purchase date.

Somehow, I think your key is tied to your account. Cool idea though +1

I forgot to ask :

WHEN will Stardock sell their games on GOG ? ( and allow to register our copies in here )
Post edited November 03, 2012 by ne_zavarj
I think Brad said they've considered selling some of their oldest games here, but have not yet made any decision. New games like FE are pretty much not going to be sold here any time soon.
Got it free since I'm one of those who ordered the boxed CE version of Elemental then. Feels like a better game to Elemental, still playing the campaign scenario.

If they are both registered on your account, then you wouldn't be able to give them away.

I think you should send a mail to support@stardock.com regarding those questions. They should be more qualified to give you an answer.

In other news, here is an Interview PCGamesN did with Derek Paxton

They are quite informative regarding certain design decisions and challenges during FEs development.

Fallen Enchantress at two weeks

Big_battleFallen Enchantress has now been out two weeks. So far, we’ve sold about 50,000 units (give or take). This is somewhat below Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion but, obviously, far far ahead of War of Magic during the same time frame.

The biggest obstacle has been reviews. It’s hard for niche titles (and make no mistake, fantasy turn-based PC games are niche) to get coverage. There’s only so many reviewers to go around and the last thing we want is a drive by (i.e. rushed) review.

Tomorrow or Thursday we expect to release v1.01 which has a long list of fixes and tweaks that we’ve found. Probably the most obvious change will be performance which dramatically improved.

The Map Pack

We will be releasing our first-ever DLC for a Stardock game. It’ll be an interesting experiment to see what the demand is. Paul Boyer and I have designed a series of hand crafted maps that will be going up for sale in a week or two for $4.99. If sales of this are strong, we’ll look at doing additional DLC packs. A game like Fallen Enchantress lends itself to content centric DLC and so we’re anxious to see what people are interested in.

The Expansion

We have an expansion planned for early next year. I won't spoil it except to say that it’s going to re-design the way champions are handled in the game. We want the game to generally move towards the power of your champions be a reflection of the power of your civilization.

After the expansion, Stardock will look at where things stand. We have 3 game development tams at Stardock. One is on “Game X”, One is FE related stuff, and one is on mobile game development. Since we’re not likely to get as many reviews as we’d like, we’re going to be relying heavily on word of mouth.

Version 1.1

We very much want to do a pre-Christmas update to FE. That version will be heavily AI and balance focused based on player feedback. We’ll have more details of that as we get closer. Right now, we’re focusing on getting v1.01 out the door.
If there's one thing that never interests me at all in games like this, it's playing on pre-defined maps so that map pack would certainly be of no interest to me. Heck, if a game like this didn't have custom maps it wouldn't be worth half what I would put on it compared to when it does.

Low sales is not a surprise I guess, Elemental has/had a bad rep, it's hard to come back from something like that and there's a good chance some people won't give it a fair shot and shoot it down quickly because it still 'looks the same'.

Kinda hoping they do well in the end though, at least they tried, and from the sound of it it improved quite a lot.
