For me Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes witch Children of Storm mod its the best fantasy 4xstategy game ever created !
I didn't know about this but it looks right up my street. Because it will require Steam, though, I will only buy it if it is too good to ignore. By coincidence I have just discovered and installed a mod for Civ 4 (+BtS) called From from Heaven 2, a dark fantasy total conversion mod inspired by "Judeo-Christian and Celtic / Norse mythologies and the works of E.A.Poe and H.P.Lovecraft" which gets glowing praise from just about everyone who has played it. It is based on Civ 4, of course, but plays very differently, though I'm still learning about the game mechanics. Religions in this game are much more important than they are in vanilla Civ 4 : each of the seven religions has an alignment :

Good
Good-Neutral
Neutral-Good
Neutral
Neutral-Evil
Evil-Neutral
Evil

Each of the 21 purely fantastic and highly imaginatively conceived civilisations also starts with an alignment, though in this case there are no intermediate grades, it is just Good, Neutral or Evil. Adopting a religion can alter the alignment of a Civ and the whole alignment system affects diplomacy drastically.

Each Civ also has many unique units (more than vanilla Civ4 has) and also at least one Hero unit, a unit which gains experience and levels up over time.

I'm only scratching the surface here, this looks to me like an absolute masterpiece of a mod. Magic features very prominently. There are many spheres of magic (18 or 21, I've forgotten which) , for instance : death, fire, chaos, life, nature, earth. Each Civ starts with a palace which naturally produces mana (mana is necessary for casting spells and has to be of a kind corresponding to the sphere of magic which the spell belongs to, so death magic spells require death mana) of three kinds, different kinds for different Civs ; for instance, the Luichuirps (spelling ?), a Good aligned dwarven Civ, starts with Life, Enchantment and Earth magic. In order to cast spells, however, you will need to produce an adept, a mage or an archmage : these units also gain experience points and can level up and upgrade, so for instance a level 4 adept can upgrade to a (level 1) mage. There are also raw mana nodes which appear on the map in the same way as resources do and which can be upgraded by your adepts to nodes of a specific type of mana. Each Civ also has its own World Spell. There is so, so much more to this mod though ...

The epicness of this mod is already apparent to me and I still don't understand fully how it all fits together, but I'm going to have fun finding out. The background mythology is worthy of Tolkien himself and reminds me somewhat of The Silmarillion.

I didn't make this post to deflect attention from Fallen Enchantress, which from the superficial glance I've given it looks like a mighty impressive game in the making, but it reminded me of Fall from Heaven 2 (which is VERY easy to install, btw) and since Stardock created Galactic Civilisations, which is very similar to Civilisation, it has got me wondering whether Fallen Enchantress and Fall from Heaven 2 are in any ways similar / different ?

I haven't played FFH, but the maker of that mod, Derek "Kael" Paxton, is the lead designer of Fallen Enchantress and Legendary Heroes.

Aha, so there's my answer in a nutshell. Very intriguing, thanks.
I got this free, I bought E:WoM early. I haven't decided if I'm ready to try it. I played FE some when it first came out. It just couldn't keep my attention. I haven't tried its later updates, so maybe I didn't give it a fair shot but I'm concerned it will happen with LH. Are they different enough to keep both installed, or is LH just replacing FE (like FE did to WoM)?
It's replacing it.

LH is both an expansion and stand alone to FE, since it's price depends on whether you own FE or not (although in my case I got both for free anyway) There's no reason to keep both though, unless you want to play FE's scenario.

I've tried FE but never really played it all that much. Partially that was because I was playing other things, but it never really sucked me in all that me. LE on the other hand, succeeded in doing exactly that. First of all, the battles are actually fun to play now, and each race has it's own unique combat ability that can made a big difference. Each weapon also has a unique abiltiy and there are tons of special quest only weapons and such. City building doesn't seem to have changed much but somehow seemed better anyway. I like how I was only able to find room to build three cities at first, but nonetheless could keep up with neighbors four times my size because they expanded too quickly and on poor plots. Yes, you can build a huge empire with dozens of cities, but you'll have to do it carefully and choose city bonuses that reduce unrest. By the end of the game I do this with no difficulty.

So yeah, LH is finally a great fantasy 4x and I highly recommend it.

New huge 1.3 patch is out:

Stardock Releases Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes 1.3 Update

This “Empires” patch focuses on making the AI more dangerous and diverse. There are more than just monsters roaming the world, and the AI players have been updated based on feedback from the fans to be more effective in both strategic and tactical mode. AI players are now more adept at using their magical power, building more lethal armies, protecting their territory, pathfinding and more. Even the AI for the random monsters has been improved, allowing them to better guard their lairs against adventurers.

In addition to the vastly improved AI system, the 1.3 update includes updates to the Hiergamenon to bring all its entries up to current rules, UI improvements, gameplay balance updates, bug fixes and a new spell called Ineluctable Vision.

New big dlc for FE LH:

Design your own undead army or lead the Empire of the Dead to dominion over the living
in the latest DLC for Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes.

The ancient sorcerer now known as Morrigan the Risen returns to leave another black stain on history as he leads the Empire of the Dead in his skeletal form. All-new mechanics change the way undead empires form and grow; they grow their population by spreading cemeteries and mausoleums rather than farming food like lesser races. Undead casters enjoy all-new spells, including the abilities to feed on the lifeforce of friendly units and even conjure a powerful but temporary army from nothing.

Fearsome monsters await in the Dead World. Undead varieties of the already-terrifying half-spider Brood and the never-before-seen hell knights challenge adventurers and armies alike. A new hand-crafted map holds carefully placed secrets to discover.

The Dead World DLC Features

A brand new faction: the Empire of the Dead, led by the nefarious sorcerer Morrigan the Risen. Undead ignore food, growing their population by building cemetaries and mausoleums and by reanimating slain foes
New spells for undead casters – summon a powerful but temporary army, feed on the lifeforce of friendly units in battle, and more
New undead empire fully implemented in faction/army creators – design your own skeletal and spectral troops
New custom map: The Dead World
New Hellknight monsters – powerful mounted undead knights with enchanted gear
New Risen Brood monsters – skeletal undead half-spider monstrosities
