Telika: So this is a perfectly valid comparison. Words such as "locales", "natives", "autochtons" should be suppressed from your dictionary.
Not really, because those words have a point. There is a genuine need to point out that some people are natives to an area, because it's not obvious or assumed on meeting. A person's gender matching their biological sex is not a thing people are unsure about, need to inquire about or can't tell immediately in 99% of cases.

I already have enough snow outside my window, I don't need more 'special snowflakes'.
No one yet has convinced me or the millions on facebook that wanted this that this is a bad idea. And you won't. Facebook has made its decision. Whine and complain or not, they will stick with it, and good for them :)

Do you know why? Because (at least here) there ARE no people who claim that this is a "bad idea". You've seemed very eager to pick a fight with people who do not exist. If you're looking for outraged bigots, foaming at their mouths at the very thought of anything transcending the gender binary, you will have to seek them out elsewhere.
Now, if you have any education in a relevant field, feel free to enlighten us. So far - Telika's comprehensive explanation of the subject at hand has received the warmest response in the thread. If, on the contrary, you are merely here to pick fights... I guess the "SJW" moniker fits you rather well ;).

There are a few religious bigots in this thread that are completely against homosexuals or trans gender peoples. They think they are "sinning", which to me is just as bad as hating them. So yes, they do think this is a "bad idea". Read the first opinion in this thread and tell me that guy wasn't saying this was a "bad idea".

At the risk of being politically incorrect: Sorry, but this seems stupid.

Our current society in most countries is at a point where the majority don't even fully understand the concept of transgender, much less so a few dozen variations of it. And I'm honestly wondering what kind of impact any of these definitions/terms have or should have on real world life. It just seems ridiculously over the top.

That said, I guess it's nice they provide these options on websites, for those who have use for them. *shrug*

Things will get really interesting when all of these groups demand their own restrooms at public buildings... :P

Did you call me a "nazi" a few pages back? Honestly thought it was directed at me but it's hard to tell.

I was more pointing out how religious people are dehumanizing certain groups to make it easier to oppress them. No, I wasn't calling anyone a nazi.

Stupid ? ON FACEBOOK ? ARE YOU KIDDING, HOW COULD IT EVEN BE ?

I don't think this stuff is very serious. Many of these terms are redundant, meaningless, just rephrasing. It's the next best thing to allowing people to type in what they want - actually trying to let them choose whatever variant and formulation they might want.

But, frankly, on facebook. What is the standard, for judging idiotic stuff on Facebook ?

Multiple gender/identity/sexual preference categories is not a meaningless thing in itself - they describe existing realities. It's just hilarious on such websites. What else, skin colour, and the list of all tints they could think of ? How many choices do they have for religion ? "Catholic but not always because most of times a little buddhist still leaning towards new age when i read ufo stuff but going to church when my grandma asks me to on easter but otherwise only praying twice a month" ?

I don't man that it's dumb to be "Catholic but not always because most of times a little buddhist still leaning towards new age when i read ufo stuff but going to church when my grandma asks me to on easter but otherwise only praying twice a month", or to define oneself as "Catholic but not always because most of times a little buddhist still leaning towards new age when i read ufo stuff but going to church when my grandma asks me to on easter but otherwise only praying twice a month". And, heck, if an intrusive internet social network wants accurate answers, it makes sense to let the "Catholic but not always because most of times a little buddhist still leaning towards new age when i read ufo stuff but going to church when my grandma asks me to on easter but otherwise only praying twice a month" option available. But...

Is it really something to get all riled up about ?

Well, maybe it is nice but it can be dangerous for people who label themselves using these "gender states". FB operates worldwide. Imagine that somewhere in the world a new hitler or stalin raises to power and decides to exterminate "gender" people in his country. Using FB he would be able to create a list of these people easily....
A lot of these just sound like variations on the same thing. Granted, I'm no expert but is there really a meaningful difference between trans male, trans man, transgender male, transgender man and transmasculine? Isn't that the same thing as saying man vs. male? Again, I'm not expert and there may be very real differences in those terms. But it seems like it would just complicate matters if someone was searching for other transgender people -- now you've got a half-dozen different terms you need to search through. If you're going to allow that many options, you may as well just make "gender" a free-form text field.

Wow, what a bunch of labels. I hope those snowflakes feel special now. Sheesh.
Well that turned into a great big bowl of 'meh'. All that stuff is just part of the Custom option under the Male and Female options.
