LBartley: Are there any plans, or ideas being thrown around between GOG team members to add more features to the GOG downloader, perhaps have it more like a Steam-type thing? Game collections could be neatly managed, as they are on the website, etc.
cogadh: Based on what has been said in the past about the plans for GOG, this will not be happening. It has always been intended that the website would act as the "front end" for your GOG games collection and that there would be no additional applications required to install or use those games. If you want that kind of functionality, then just add your GOG games to Steam as a non-Steam game.
I'm absolutely not suggesting the downloader be mandated. more what I'm proposing is that it become an optional front-end for the service. If a game you own is updated, or a new version of DOSBox is released, the downloader could detect and update that for you.
I used Steam as an example, because it's the only other program I can think of that does anything similar at all. I'm certainly not suggesting it as any kind of idea of perfection. I CERTAINLY don't want any Steam-like DRM schemes added to anything on GOG.
I love the service as is, but I was thinking this would bring more unity to customers' game collections.
