Trilarion: Why would you need a permit to give food to somebody else (for free)? I wonder how the authorities will justify their steps. I can hardly think of any good reason. However maybe they can use a shop / apartment / parking lot / from a van/ ... place instead of the park if the local government doesn't want to be so kind as to support charity. I have the feeling there should be a better solution in any case.

amok: I am not questioning the permit, it is a bit silly. Understandable, maybe, but a bit silly. I am questioning the charity not getting a permit after being told they need one. What did they think would happen?
Well, as other people in the thread have said, the permit costs $800 for a day, so wouldn't really be very practical for this as it would (unless I'm drastically underestimating the amount they raise per week) would massively cut into the amount of food they could actually give away. The permit, as far as I can tell from other people, is (supposedly) only required to distribute food in the park: they therefore did it outside it.

Cormoran: NC should follow Hawaii's idea and deal with homelessness by making it another states problem.

I say we send them all to Florida and Arizona (hell/heaven/oblivion's waiting room). Much better weather for them to be homeless in, and I never want to visit any of those hot as hell states.
I think all of this stems from the same attitude that don't want people to feed the pigeons or animals. If you don't feed them they will just go away attitude.

Nothing new. Some time ago in Poland a baker had legal trouble for giving away his old bread he coundn't sell. Reason? He didn't pay taxes for something he was giving away for free.

Governments/politicians are always looking at their pockets. If you are not filling their pockets, there must be something illegal going on and they will have to get someone to put a stop to that.

That is depressing.
This is where too much market regulation leads to. I would force everyone who runs for an election to read first Henry Hazlitt - Economics in One Lesson

darthspudius: Interesting, that's normally the kind of crap you get in the UK.
It could have happened in France, the reason would have been 'You can't distibute food on the street for a large number of people without being identified as a restaurant and thus paying taxes'

.... but I'm just kidding, because we actually have 'Les restos du coeur' in France which is an association created by Coluche (among others) which distributes food for the homeless and people in need on a notional scale (I think). Many artists and shows give money to them each years. These guys are awesome.
but why homeless people in the first place?
because you get rich when others get poor..., more taxes, vat

i never saw people in streets before 2000 now they're everywhere

While I understand your anger considering this topic I wonder which of the city’s ordinance was violated by giving out food, and especially which brainless and dickless and utterly irresponsible council member (or even worse: majority) issued that specific ordinance.

The police is probably just trying to do its job, thats a sad excuse but why does such rules against feeding the poor exist in the first place, I wonder...

My parents live in North Carolina. Needless to say, they're planning on moving to Spain - relatively soon :)

The problem is that if they make food and water free, I would have retired years ago. What else do I need money for, house is paid for, I don't need TV, I could also leave the internet and computers without too much sorrow. Food, medical, and water are the things that make me endure the torturous misery of work.
Not in the news today:

The thousands of programs - public, private, and non-profit - that feed and shelter likely millions of homeless people.

But yeah, America sucks.

US news, they only want to show depressing, shocking, or human interest stories. Anything for ratings.
