langurmonkey: I've never heard, Police going after people who feed homeless in another country. And this isn't just happening in Raleigh, NC. This is also happening in NY city. And soon, other cities will start doing this shit, I bet. Too many people in this country hate homeless people due to twisted Christian like upbringing, selfishness and a lack of real culture. If you are a civilized person, America is the #1 worst country to live in... Why am I here then? I don't have the money, skills and connections to move to a different country. I also suck at learning new languages.
Huh?
Not passing judgement until all the facts are presented. Currently there are too many unkowns in this story to be outraged just yet :)

What?

Nice people planning to feed homeless people. Then Police tells them "No".
it's like they are treated as dogs...
but
also... is RT so not trusting yet...
the only way to be sure is asking your friends in that town....
Without any more info, it seems like regulation riding. However, a question - is there a reason why this charity can not just get one of these permits? Especially since they were told about this rule before...
Seems like it costs them $800 each time if they apply for permit to use the park. Twice a week means $1,600. At least, that's according to them. Source: http://lovewins.info/2013/08/feeding-homeless-apparently-illegal-in-raleigh-nc/

rusted420: outside of the major powers many many countries dont exactly have a surplus of food to feed to the homeless
every developed country has surplus food to feed every single member of the population.
every developing country has surplus food to feed every single member of population.

the issue of food is only in places where constant war destroyed every part of food producing economy or in places where lack of food is a deliberate mechanism implemented by the ruling party.

It's more like, "Nice people have been feeding homeless people for six years. Then Police suddenly tells them "No"."
Something happened that the article does not cover. I'm just saying there is more to this story and shouldn't be taken at face value, despite the unsettling possibility that charity is being wrongfully shutdown.

Daedalus1138: Huh?
My thoughts exactly.
I thought it was pretty shitty too, because let's face it, our politicians have no regard for homeless people, and too many people just don't care. And I think it's pretty sad that there are so many police willing to disregard human decency to uphold stupid laws that have no practical application.

They've been doing this for six years, and now somebody decides it's not ok? At least they're looking into other options and hopefully will continue. Threatened with arrest for trying to help those less fortunate - ah yes, good old America.

edit: and from their website, which goes into a little more explanation than the Yahoo thing:

"In the past, we have had a good working relationship with the Raleigh Police Department. We knew that we could not use the park itself, as doing so required a permit, but that it was acceptable to set up on the sidewalk, as long as we did not block the sidewalk and cleaned up after ourselves. We have operated, unmolested, under this assumption for the last six years.

By the way, each permit to use the park costs $800. Yes, eight hundred dollars. That would cost us $1,600 every weekend, and the officer we spoke to said the City likely wouldn’t approve it anyway."

Well, there you go. Some ass probably said "Hey, we can be making money here."

rusted420: america may not be perfect but believe me all other countries are just as bad or worse. maybe in different ways sometimes but bad is still bad. it is sad too see though. thankfully most places are not as bad as what that article describes.
I would say that it would be a very unlikely coincidence if it would be everywhere equally good or bad.

For a long time the USA was a great place, offering humanity and freedom and chances... lately they underperformed and might be just average now and if nothing is done to improve and let such things as mentioned in the OP not happen who knows the USA could end up being worse than others. Difficult to say exactly though.

Why would you need a permit to give food to somebody else (for free)? I wonder how the authorities will justify their steps. I can hardly think of any good reason. However maybe they can use a shop / apartment / parking lot / from a van/ ... place instead of the park if the local government doesn't want to be so kind as to support charity. I have the feeling there should be a better solution in any case.

US never offered nothing or freedom
they had guns to eradicate the natives, they entered wars not for democracy but money
after Vietnam the vietnam veterans got treated by the state like garbage, why is now any different?

I am not questioning the permit, it is a bit silly. Understandable, maybe, but a bit silly. I am questioning the charity not getting a permit after being told they need one. What did they think would happen?
