And because I purchased the anniversary pack on their 10 year sale on Steam, I am a silver member for now. Anyone thinking of playing it? :D
There's so many good F2P MMOs out now I actually am not sure why I'd want to go back and play one that's quite that old and clunky. Did they change the horrid grinding and traveling system ever? I'm pretty sure they're largely unchanged.
I am not sure. I played for a month and despite the clunkiness I fell for the game. Pity I had to stop because of school and financial issues. It really is a good game once it pulls you into its atmosphere.
I played Fippy Darkpaw until it progressed too far. I wouldn't bother playing on a non progression server. Also, under the bronze membership or whatever, you only get access to the most basic spell levels, which is pretty shitty. It's not worth it for that reason alone. If only more people played on Shards of Dalaya.
Steam has alot of quality F2P games and i will try to make time to play this one. I have never played Everquest, so it will be a completely new experience for me. I refuse to pay any monthly fee for MMO, so this is perfect for me. As long as there are enough players to make it fun, i will definitely play it eventually.

Thanks to all these quality F2P games that i now spend very little money on games :)

Hopefully any restrictions wont deter you from the game :D
I don't know, my experience with MMOs is that they are generally a grindfest. I find myself sinking hours into them but, unlike other games, I look back and think... why?

I know lots of people enjoy them though, so good news for them.
I may re-install it once I build a new computer....

I played way way way way way back in the day Kunark, SoV original era :) I tried playing it again awhile back... forgot how to type for quests lol....

teach me your ways :D
EverQuest certainly qualifies as a Good Old Game and I would encourage anyone curious about it to go see for this classic firsthand. The graphics run the gamut from old school 1999 to fairly modern in newer zones. The game like all MMOs is definitely a grind so if you don't enjoy that as a relaxing pastime you aren't suddenly going to enjoy it here. But if you think you might enjoy whiling away the hours exploring, making camp somewhere and carefully pulling one monster at a time to kill, then this game could be a lot of fun for you.

The world is huge with so many places to explore and so much background lore and history to it. Nowadays though you'll do a lot of your exploring solo on most servers until you reach the level cap and have some AA under your belt to group. The newest progression server would maybe be an exception as well as the new Vox server for f2p players. That should be flooded with people checking out the game or coming back for a nostalgic visit to the world of Norrath. So you might be lucky here and enjoy the great fun of low level grouping.

You are not going to level up and play the end game quickly in EverQuest today and you aren't going to do it at all going free to play. You can be sure of that. Besides leveling to the cap you need another 1000 levels of Alternate Advancement points (mini-levels) just to meet the basic requirements to raid. So for anyone looking at this as a serious MMO venture just be prepared for a long haul although I would not say it couldn't be a fun one because I think it still can be.

As a casual experience I think today's EQ can be fun in its old school way. It is not quest driven like modern MMOs despite its name. Yes it does have some truly epic quests and some other very cool quests for certain rewards but basically it's all about making camp various places and grinding mobs. Personally, I found this a lot of fun for many years both solo and in groups. In my EQ heyday I was in the number one raiding guild on my server (Drinal) and before that I was in the number 3 raid guild on Stromm server. I had a fantastic time and have a lot of good memories of playing EQ. I also spent more hours in Norrath than I would want to think about now or admit to.

If you are going to try EverQuest do yourself a favor and visit Allakhazam.com and bookmark it. Everything you need to know for quite a while you can find there from information about what zones are appropriate for your level to quests lookups to info on gear and quests or places to get it.

Early to mid EQ gear isn't really that important. Whatever you come upon is fine. There is a somewhat new line of drops that is fairly common that you'll see in your travels which is nice stuff for leveling up but even that you don't actually need. It's OP for the old content but fun to loot a piece of it you can use.

Not long ago I resubscribed to EQ2 and decided at the time to blow another 5 bucks on Station Access so I can visit old EQ whenever I like and have some solo fun with my old toons. I still have some friends there who never left which is nice. I figured it would be fun to try out DC Universe Online without restrictions too as a bonus.

Nowadays I would never again play any MMO like I once played EverQuest. I lived in that world constantly and raided six nights every week. Now I just have fun playing the leveling, exploring, questing game, largely solo and enjoy myself just as much but with far less hours spent at it. I like having time now for other things including other games like my GOGs and Steam games.

Sorry to go on and on here but I hope that encourages some of you to go see the magic for yourself. You of all people would tend to be the ones who could appreciate the greatness of the old EverQuest world so long as you at least somewhat like the genre. I admit to wearing the nostalgia glasses here but there is good reason for them. The game earned the right to be called a classic.

There is a reason this game was known as evercrack...
I played until Omen of War. Best mmo I have ever played. And awesome lore.

Were you in Cats in Hats by chance (drinal).......? ? Sorry on my phones browser. So I didn't snip your whole post.....
I played EQ for many years. I quit the last time because the game world was too big and they had killed the necessity of players working together for more than just killing things.

I loved the old days of EQ. Having to retrieve all your stuff from your corpse where it dropped. Having to drag your corpse across an entire zone to get a rez. Very limited inventory, had to choose what to keep or sell. Actual GMs patrolling to make sure people weren't exploiting the system. Buying "gold" was pretty much a guaranteed account ban. Veteran players helping noobs learn to play not just power leveling them.

Sony marked the beginning of the end for EQ.

I still miss those old days when I think back on them.

Yes I was for a time! Great bunch back then. I best remember Aakla the wonderful role playing Troll SK. I hope I spelled his name right. I forget now how it was spelled.

Were you in Cats also?
