I was thinking, have you ever bought a game just to "help developers" rather than it being a game you were genuinely interested in?

I'm not having a go at any one game in particular, but alot of the time i see there are always people who defend a game, no matter how bad or unpopular it is. It's almost as if some people buy games because they feel sorry for them.

EDIT: Just to clarify, it wasn't a pity purchase. I was only interested in supporting DRM-free gaming.

Paid 10 bucks to support Path of Exile, thats about it.

I do own 5 legal copies of Baldurs Gate . Shadows of Amn.

One German, another German one cause one disk got a failure, two english ones to support the devs and finally the gog version to have it forever available.

Generally I use to take a look at game before I buy them and only buy them if I think its worthy to support the devs. This applies to any game I played at least 10 hours.

I find it a bit sad that almost no greater developerstudio has a donate button for their games. This way I could assure my money goes fully to the developers. Not to the store, the transport, and all the other people involved into presenting the game disk to me. It would also give me the possibility to donate later when I have more money available.

If I buy a game, it is because I'm interested in it.

However, there have been games that I bought day one to support the developers:
- The Witcher 2: bought it day one and waited for the big patch to play it
- Darksiders2: bought it day one and I still have to download it

That's all.

I pre-ordered The Witcher 2 even though I knew my laptop wouldn't be able to run it properly and that I would have to wait half a year after the release to get a desktop PC that would. I would've bought it sooner or later anyway, so I don't know if it counts.

Yes. I brought Penumbra Collection and Amnesia from the Frictional Games website. Even though I'm scared to play it. Just a couple of minutes of play I think.

I'm thinking along the lines of bad/disappointing sequels of classic games. They live off the nostalgia of the good old games, and seem to support the devs/games/brand without question.

And I bought plenty of games just to support the devs. It ranges from big games like ME 3 to small indies like Grimrock. Grimrock I bought twice just because the devs were especially awesome and kind to a handicapped community member.

I also never pay the minimum on bundles. Quite often I pay more on them than I would pay for the games themselves.

I'll probably do this with the upcoming South Park game to support Obsidian some more. Looks like it could be fun, even though I haven't really watched South Park in some time.

if GOG are willing to sell actual, new, AAA titles here DRM free, with extra goodies, then I am behind them and willing to support them 100%

Considering the massive updates, free DLC, free goodies and free Upgrade to Enhanced edition, my Witcher 2 purchase here was more than worth the money I paid for it

Not to simply support a developer, no.

Although much like with AlKim, I did pre-order The Witcher 2 despite not having a machine capable of playing it. I did it not only because I wanted the game, but because it was a DRM-free AAA release, and after so much bitching about DRM, I was morally obliged to put my money where my mouth is :-)

No, I've never purchased a game with the strict intention of supporting the devs, but I have bought games because I've trusted the devs, even though I probably would not have looked twice at the game, had it not been for the people involved in making the game.
Nergal01 mentioned The Stick of Truth as an example, and I suspect that I'll buy it as well. I'm not supper interested in South Park, but I'm interested in seeing what Obsidian can do with the licence. It won't be a day one purchase though, I'll most likely wait for a sale.
