that article embodies pretty much why I hate MMOs quite well throw in spotty teens telling you how to play and time wasted that about covers it.

played dust 514 for 2 weeks. Even connected keyboard and a mouse to my ps3 for the occasion. I'm sort of dissapointed. Sadface.

I played the trial a while ago and while I enjoyed it more than I thought I feel like I wouldn't have the energy to continue, I've a hard time with loss even in games so if I can't keep some kind of control the game becomes a catch 22 for me. I'll probably try again in the future if I get time and energy.

A friend of mine is a serious player - always trying to get me into it, but I just dont enjoy online games - sadly as EVE is definately the kind of theme I like. I just stick to a bit of X3 when the mood takes me.

May 6th, new build with a lot more depth and many gameplay/stability fixes. It does still need improvements to advance beyond it's beta form but it's come a long way from the builds that were out a few months ago.

I should also mention that I usually don't go in for multi or online much these days. I've been pretty burned out by the frequent nature of most online games and the way their creators (usually more publishers than Devs but either way) tend to milk things and provide weak support etc.

For me EVE is different, it's a true sandbox where what you do isn't constrained by pre-scripted events.
I find that it's a very easy game to play solo, but also becomes more fun with friends because (unlike my experience of so many other online games) you don't have to be locked into the same play times or specific player numbers to collaborate. I enjoy sharing projects with friends who are in vastly different time zones. We're hardly ever on at the same time but we can still work together. In addition the diversity in possible options is pretty solid (I'm about a year in and still have things that I haven't even tried yet).

For a mostly offline single player guy like myself EVE is a great online experience because it allows me to play when I want as long as I want and the social aspect is (with the right group of people) a take or leave it aspect which can be added to what I'm doing on my own. Plus I have to admit I really enjoy sandbox game play.


Dust on the other hand is still a beta but as it continues to become more complex and diverse (as well as actually getting it's core game play down and squashing bugs) it's pretty appealing for a free to play game. I usually despise "microtransactions" but so far the way they're present in Dust isn't 'pay to win' and doesn't seem like straight up money grubbing so I've been pleasantly surprised there. And the real cheery on top is how the two games are taking place in real time within a single player driven universe. Granted Dust is only taking its very first steps regarding a meaningful presence there but full integration is slated and if done well will really provide a very fun long term game that can be played free (assuming you have a PS3). And much like UT2004 it's also pretty solo for an online game, you can hop in play and log off without any other strings. There are advantages to having a group that you work with in a tactical way but playing solo is also possible (I do mostly solo myself and haven't run into any heavy barriers to that play style).

I have to admit however that as much as I'm more single player oriented I still think it would be nice to get some GOG folks into a game together at some point =) (which is why I resurrected this thread)

Ive been playing for what, 2 years now.

Played it back at release, sometimes it felt like I was just looking at a pretty screensaver, I just didnt take to it at all :(

Just a couple examples, mucking about in New Eden is what I get up too when not chewing through my massive GOG backlog (currently focused on nwn2 as my gf is playing it heavily). So, if any of you decide to put a toe in the water, or are already splashing about and want a bit of company at some point, feel free to give a shout :)
